Here's a Wenger Champ.  (I'd like to know when it was made... hint, hint.)  It is not as clean as it looks: very, very slight twists in the tips of the spear blade and nail file, and there is a little wobble in the corkscrew.  Nothing that affects function, but who owns one of these to use, so what else is there besides condition?  Still, it is a cool old knife.

Nice. I have one just like it.  How well does the magnifier work on yours?  Mine turns everything viewed through it into a blurry, fun-house mirror mess.  It is definitely inferior to the Victorinox magnifiers, and unusable for the most part.

I fooled around comparing my Wenger Champ's magnifier to the clear-plastic-framed one on my Vic SwissChamp.  (The emphasis should be on "fool" here.  I hope someone who knows something about optics will explain this to all of us...)  Anyway, for me, the Wenger provided higher magnification but the field of view was smaller.  My Vic was much easier to bring into focus and had a larger area that was both magnified and in focus, but I could see finer details on the same object using the Wenger.

The higher the magnification, the more correction is required. So single, high mag lenses often have limited depth of field.  In lower magnification it's easier to correct those problems in a single lens.  This is one reason why my 10x  B+L Hastings Triplet Loupe was 55 bucks. It's a highly corrected, compound optical design.

Off topic a little bit, but after seeing both the old gray and newer clear mag glasses in the collectors knives, like X..XAVXLT $350 knife...has both glasses...

I got to thinking if the layers of a knife were arranged carefully and 2 mag glasses were kept a specific distance apart (on the same end of the knife obviously), perhaps with some kind of micro-adjust on one of them...this could act as a monocular or microscope, no? Using the 2 lenses together.

Only recently I realized that the clear plastic ones are not one piece, and the lens pops right out...seems like a good idea for service/repair especially since plastic will scratch easier...but I've never seen the lenses available for sale (though I'm guessing it's just a standard size that Vic orders from a supplier)

I have an answer from Victorinox Twitter:
This might be silver plated aluminum "antique silver"

I'll add this info to SAKwiki as soon as I can :-)
