Okay, I just have to say it - using the Rebar's pliers hurts like heck.

I love the Rebar.  But dang - did you ever really grip down hard when using the Rebar's pliers?  It tears your hand up and hurts. Bad. Not as bad as the PST, but close.  When using the pliers, you are gripping down on the sharpish edges of the MT body, the file, the spine of the blade, etc.  This is just one more of many good reasons to have outside accessible tools (which have their own obvious benefit), because it gives you a smooth handle to squeeze when the pliers are deployed.  I'm a Leatherman junkie, but gripping a Swisstool Spirit - at twice the price, granted - is like snuggling up to Kate Upton's love pillow in comparison.  I do carry the Rebar more than any other MT, though, because in Powernoodleworld it beats out every other MT in the utility to weight contest.

I'm probably just a sissy.

Since there is a way to have outside opening tools and simultaneously a more comfortable and effective grip (not to mention proper knife alignment, less thickness, more tools, more combination tools, better fit and finish etc at a price that is about equal for Europeans) I don't understand why they still produce multitools with inside opening tools that cut through flesh (or use the SOG system that adds another step). The Wave/Charge/Surge is half a step close to the ideal, but the other LM tools obviously not.

  • I'm an Adult?!?! When did that happen?
  (j/k)

Actually I agree, the Rebar is a great MT but if it had outside opening tools and comfy handles in pliers mode it would be GREAT.

  • Apparently it is possible to have too many tools;)
Are there some sharp edges on the handles or back of the tools (left over from manufacturing) that could be smoothed off with a diamond file, or is it just inherent in the design ?

I have used mine a bunch at work and home.
normally i work with gloves on but not always. I haven't had issue with the pliers being painful to use.

I don't like hearing that some people are having issues with it.

its got to be the inside opening tools.

I'm not sure if I have an MP600 in my arsenal.  I have a bunch of Gerbers that never get any love.  But you are squeezing a smooth handle on the MP600 and not the tool set, so it certainly looks like a candidate for an comfy squeeze.

Awesome pic, Mr. Kampfer.

I don't exactly know how Upton's pillows felt like, but I have to agree the Spirit handles are some of the best to hold onto.

I guess Victorinox have been making outside tools MT, namely SAK, for decades and to them, probably having outside tools for their Plier-based MT is just natural progression.  But for other MT makers, making outside tool may require a whole new level of precision, and any poor tool retention may just lead to potential lawsuit and bad rep.

I've been using my rebar all day without gloves and it hasn't bugged me a bit.

it might depend on the tool.

I got a much newer rebar at home I need to test.

hmmm

Ouch!  I havent carried mine yet or really used it much at all.  I'll give it an inspection though and see if mine is sharp.  My first wave has sharp edges that used to slice me pretty good.

It is the spine of the saw & file that hurt.

I used my rebar hard and ungloved today.

it was not painful to me.

I took the pic after using it very hard at work.

I still have to look at the newer one.

I hate to disagree with powernoodle. He wouldn't post something he didn't think was true. I've known his name from the forums for as long as I can remember.

its got to be a tool to tool thing.

I don't seem to have this problem either. But if anyone is really concerned about it I would suggest another tool, there's so many to choose from!

Same here. Never had any cuts, scrapes or scratches as shown above. Maybe some of us have rougher hands that aren't as susceptible to injury when using our MT's.  :D

For some reason this quote from a movie popped into my head while reading this thread.

"It rubs the lotion on its skin. It does this whenever it's told." - Jame "Buffalo Bill" Gumb  >:D

Exactly, choose and use what's better for you. But then again, it might not be the tool with the problem.  :-X

I tried squeezing mine hard and ya they hurt quite a bit, no skin damage though.  Its the back of the file that hurt the most, but a minute with some sandpaper could fix it.

Okay, I just went and got my Rebar out of my Camelback where it lives and gave it some SERIOUS squeezing... not a mark on my hands. But I work with handtools all day in my job so my hands are probably quite tough.
I did notice when I started this current job after 5 years behind a desk that my hands were a bit "delicate".

Not knocking anyone who has a job that doesn't beat up their hands, but yeah, I think some people just have softer skin. (your wives/girlfriends are probably thankful :D)
