Looks fun!  Ive been interested in tinder materials lately.  All the examples I see to make fire use charcloth, but what if you havent made a fire yet to make char cloth.  What else can catch a spark?  Ive heard some sort of fungus, but not sure which?

I guess I was thinking what did the early peoples use to catch the spark if they had flint and steel but nothing else on them except what was in the forest?

Back in the day, if they didn't have charcloth on them, they would use a fire bow. And if you didn't have cotton to make charcloth, you can use punky wood and char it.

Here I use bamboo shavings, just scrape the back of your machete up and down the bamboo like you would a draw knife. If it is dry you get a great pile of dust but if it's fresh you still get usable long shavings.

In the US I use moss, dead grass, dander, bamboo (grows everywhere at home), or cattails (Typha).

Good job there mate :) I like the charcloth container/cooker I might have to copy it as I never want vast amounts of charcloth :)

Great post, anything outdoor post reading is just good time for me too!  :D

Mora Bushcraft survival is gotta be my favorite Mora, and I do like how you make charcloth with cotton ball, great job!

Btw, my survival kit video is still in progress.  I completed a ~13min version, with some info on each item in kit.  But I am in progress to furnish it with more side clips to show how those items work in real live.  Hopefully it will be ready sometime mid next month.

Yes I have. What works even better is cottonballs dipped in pine pitch.

Again I'm rather late to the party, but I suspect you are thinking of horse hoof fungus.  Not tried it myself though.

Hello,

This seems a tedious work.
I prefer to use a fire starter instead which is more effective and fast as well.

If I need to pick some good EDC tools.
Then I would take my love leatherman multi tool wave and a flash light. Other are just a waste !!!

Hello,

This seems a tedious work.
I prefer to use a fire starter instead which is more effective and fast as well.

I get it and felt somewhat the same however the more time I spend in the great out doors I find it more and more fun.

I have several means at my disposal to start fire and a lighter plus accelerant is fast granted but surely not as fun.  In a survival scenario getting a fire going fast is great but in an outdoor skills scenario "making" fire is about having a good time and testing ones abilities.

I have been having a great time learning to make fire many different ways and while I'll always carry a lighter in my fire kit char cloth has a place as well, not to mention other things.

Don't take this as bagging on you I'm certainly not but some of us enjoy the process and getting out in the woods is not about fast it's about basic.

Another good addition to that kit is a small piece of pine wood, preferably one with lots of dry resin. You can use some scrapes from it as a base for catching some sparks.

You can also use Daldinia Consentrica (sp?), AKA cramp balls or King Alfreds Cakes.

Great thread Nate  I think I was on my six month leave of absence when this first popped up (real life is a PITA sometimes).

I must admit that I'm half in agreement with colt. I'm not about instant success necessarily, but I like to make things easy wherever possible. I've kind of passed the phase where I was "up for the challenge", and now think that if getting a fire is hard work, I obviously haven't thought it through enough yet  :D

I got some extra flint. You will have to get a steel striker though. I don't have any extra one. I have been thinking about trying to make a couple.
