Mini review: Lansky World Legal knife
on: June 03, 2014, 06:02:47 PM
Let's start with a picture

Or two

The idea is that its a work knife, suitable for carry in those countries where there's laws prohibiting the carry of locking knives. All good so far?

Good.

As such it's a slip joint, with half stops on opening and closing. It also has a pocket clip, with four optional positions to suit both left and right handed owners. The blade is a modern interpretation of a warncliffe or Sheepsfoot blade profile, hopefully making it more friendly to the non-knife community.

All good? Yes?

So,what's it like in the flesh?

Hmmm....

Fit and finish is not quite what I'd hope for. Straight out of the packaging there's some dirty marking or discolouration on the blade

Further, the steel of the blade(440 stainless) is not highly polished. Oh,and the blade was so blunt I doubt it would have cut butter. The package I bought included the Lansky Blade Medic, and it took a number of passes through firstly the carbide, then the ceramic sharpeners to put an edge on the blade.

Fit of liners and scales is good

Ergonomics are good. The pocket clip is functional, and held in place by a single screw.

Everyone happy so far? Excited by this so far? Yes?

Well here's the bugbear. When I first seen this,I thought it would be a similar size to the Boker 42s. Time for new glasses I think! It's sodding massive!

That's both 85mm and 91mm SAKs for comparison! The Lansky might be world legal, but I doubt it's going to people friendly!

Just take it/flick it out a few times at work and see how people react. Make sure you shout yaaaaahh when you do that to get more attention. If anybody complaints point the knife at them whilst explaining that it is totally legal.

So,to round up....

The Lansky would be a good knife for someone working in warehousing,or a tradesman. However,if you worked in those lines, you'd have justification for having a locking knife.

It's looks are defiantly not people friendly! As someone said in my original thread, its a solution to a nonexistent problem!

Pros
Low cost
Good ergonomics
Easy to sharpen

Cons
Aggressive looking
Large
Standard of finish doesn't match bottom end SAKs or Rough Riders of similar value

Wow, indeed!

I suppose they made it blunt to make sure it'd really be legal everywhere?

After seeing those comparison pics, I must agree - it's just way too big to whip out, in a crowded place. However, with the danish knife laws and crappy quality of most utility knives I've stumbled upon, I think it would be great for use in a warehouse or similar. Locking knives might be legal in such a situation, but personally I'd prefer a slipjoint - I'm pretty sure I'm not alone in that.

Good idea, really awful execution.  May as well just carry a SAK or a traditional pattern slipjoint given the size of that thing, I mean what's the point of making the knife "legally" acceptable when it looks like something the police may hassle you over anyways?

Actually this is rather my issue with the UK legal Spyderco knives.  Don't get me wrong, I think most of them are very good knives, especially my excellent Byrd Tern, but I don't routinely carry mine outside of work as it's just not very friendly looking.

That was my first thought on seeing one of them. It's a terrible idea, and a solution looking for a problem to solve, and it's going to cause a problem. Basicly, I see it as a ploy by Lansky to sell a tacticool knife to people where tacticool knives are not allowed.  Never under estimate the money to be made selling tacticool junk to keyboard comando's and mall ninja's. Try carrying that thing in the U.K. and you will end up down at the police station explaining it, or trying to.
Don't get too serious, just enough will do.

How well does that clip hold with just the one screw?

I've never had an issue with Spyderco's wire clips, even held with one screw.  It's quite secure.

Same here, both ukpk and dragonfly carry very securely. I wish more knives came with those. Very low profile. :tu:

Two points....

1) The Lansky is +/-£18,the Spydies are+/-£50. For fifty quid, you can have a warm cuddly SwissChamp . Mind you,for eighteen quid you can have a Tinker

2) If either the Squeak or the Pingo were the size of a Ladybug...
Both are pretty big to be whipping out in public in London :pok:
