Oh wow, you didn't mess about with the first one!

Lovely
Well my peening is best described as industrial. However using brass scales allowed you to sand away the incriminating evidence.  Therefore making up brass scales was the best option for me. Thanks to syph for the heads up on the thickness of the brass. Also the how to sticky (sorry cannot remember who did it) really help.

Good job!  I found peening the little guys pretty tough too, and sanding away the bruises really helps! :D  My problem was that I was peening too much so that the tools ended up too tight so I had to redo a few rivets before I was happy.  Next time I'm going to put in some stainless steel shim stock, peen, then pull out the shim so that there is some free play.

Yep that's the problem with the scissors on mine and I think shim may be the solution.  Thanks

Nothing more to it worth mentioning?

Here is the donor knife.

This mod took about 4 hours. I used the scales from the donor knife. The bitch is finding the solid scales to do the exposed rivets mods. The CT 34 is my favorite Vic. I have made many variations from it. All I have is a drill and a dremel to work with. I need a belt sander to do this type of mod easier and faster. Next time I would only have 3 rivets exposed. I had to use the spring from the old knife to clear the old awl shape. The new style spring is curved in and won't allow the old style awl to close completely. The old spring also has better snap the the new opener spring. The old style awl and opener spring were the only parts from the donor used.

Peening on 58mm is really touch and go. What I like to do is start out by peening on all 4 pins and getting most of the side play in the tools out, then fine tune it from there. Peen a little bit on a pin, check play in the tool served by that pin, peen some more, check play...ad nauseum until I've worked the side play out.

While possibly not the approved method I have just found with brass scales if the snap is not there as rivets are just too tight.  Sliding the bit of a door key in that you hold and giving a slight twist just loosens them off enough.  Scissors now have a lovely snap.

Thanks mate, this just made me decide to try and restore a vintage sak with rivets.
I've got a set solid scales to use for.  :)

Last night, I decided that I liked that blue alox USB Rambler that I made for my coworker so much that I wanted a similar one for myself. I had a pair of leftover blue alox scales from the Midnite Manager build and some leftover parts from a couple of recent teardowns. With all of that, I built up a blue alox Drifter (one of those +B exclusive models)...and of course, you know me...I had to have the USB module in there. Very nice extension to the Rambler, could very well be the 58mm EDC for me. Basically, it's an alox Rambler with USB, emergency blade, pointy nail file and flat head with ruler markings. Here's a couple of pics:

In regards to my coworker's mod, I presented it to him today and told him of what went into the creation of the mod...specifically, his dad's Rally knife. Definitely some sentimental moments there.
VERY NICE!  I'm planning on making one that's almost identical to that.  Not sure if I'm going to include the USB or not though.  I rarely, if ever need one of those.

I don't have a name for it. It's a Wenger with the basic tools I want for backpacking. No can opener/bottle opener layer, locking blade with no corkscrew on the other side (that was the difficult part), smooth back.

After finally getting hold of a red Farmer, now I don't want to EDC it, I think it will become a "fondler" you know... hand candy for watching TV.

Anyway, I did pick up a red Pioneer settler with very used blades and a plain vanilla "like new" Farmer with engraved scales recently. Still had a Solo spring kicking around so I threw them all in a shoebox along with a pair of 91mm scissors and gave it a good shake...

I know the saw is "backwards" to normal along with the scissors, but i want to try it that way ::)
I may swap it round at some later stage. Also the layer order may get changed...  but I'm happy with it for now, it's a nice "Vintage" looking user with all new tools.

I'd hit it .

Pretty nice knife there...green scales with the old silver cross, that's unique. I don't think I've seen one like that before.

Nice stuff guys.
Today I went shopping to find donor 58s. In one second hand shop I picked up a classic, the bijou (with broken spring) and what I believe to be a Princess (also came with a broken spring). Both are now repaired.

The Classic and what was left of a minichamp went into making the brass scaled item.  I don't think this configuration has a name.  However for me it is the ultimate kids birthday/ Christmas morning tool.  The scraps went into the scribe like tool, which as it has the tooth pick will ride around in my pocket.

Thanks Chrissy. The brass looks better now ( got rid of the scratches). Grubby, you should have seen the state of the three I got today prior to performing surgery.

I assume brass is a little easier to finish than some other metals, being softer?

Also, have you ever tried using Micromesh? I have a set of different grits from a guy on BB - really useful stuff. It goes down to fine enough to polish up almost anything to a mirror finish, and is material backed, washable, and reusable :)

Yep. I like it as it doesn't spark when grinding.  Not tried micro mesh will keep an eye out for it
