A liner similar to the one in this pic (minus the area marked with a sharpee) or the full liner similar to WS layer pic I shared earlier will be fine.

Camera angle/lighting or am I looking at a black spring?

It's just the normal spring... Looks black due to both camera angle and lighting...

Ah yes I see now...a variation in the liners......red Champ (2007 on the package, has gray magnifier), you can see it has a solid, thick plate between MS and WS,  USA flag Champ has the newer file and liner like your photo.

2 of my 3 donor knives showed up today, still waiting on the 110mm

Seeing your wood scales in progress has me considering making some purpleheart scales...but I don't wanna give up tweezers...

Sourced from a friend... Unfortunately, 2.2mm sized pins are unavailable in this part of the world... Had to stick it in the rotary tool and sandwhich it between sandpapers...

I received the 111m knife today (I've been calling it a 110mm knife, NOOB). Got 2 of the donors taken apart, the Champ and the Outrider.

I liked that little nylon scales Sportsman so much I didn't have the heart to take it apart...and now I wish it had scissors (tried to see if I could find any of the older 84mm knives that still had scissors...search continues.)

If I want a nail file instead of the small blade, going into a 91mm knife...which knives should I be looking at to get that implement?
Seems like the Sportsman is one of the only ones. I'm guessing whenever I see a nail file instead of small blade in a 91mm custom build, it was taken from the 84mm Sportsman?

I did a quick test fit of the fine phillips from underneath the scissors on the Outrider as a replacement for the magnifying glass across from the larger size phillips in a 91mm chassis.

There's plenty of room for it. But there are 3 issues:
-It's pretty loose when closed...I know it's supposed to be a little bit loose since it's deployed with that goofy hook. The standard phillips will keep the fine phillips from swinging out on its own, but it would be nice if it was a little tighter when closed. Granted...when I get it all sandwiched together and pinned up, the friction of the liners pressing on the sides of it may keep it from flapping around.
-The fine phillips is thinner than the standard phillips/mag glass/LED layer...I expected this and just need to put a spacer in there...but the difference is minor...the fine phillips is the thickness of scissors...going to need very thin stock to cut a spacer from...or should I just use a very thin washer?
-The little hook that's there to help you deploy the screwdriver would interfere with a keyring...but I'm thinking I just need to keep the screwdrivers layer away from the can/bottle layer...screwdrivers in the middle layer would be ace. I tried swapping the positions of the regular and fine phillips on the spring but then the regular phillips doesn't snap nice into the 90 degree position.

Serrations went Ok I guess...there is still a "blob" of metal on the surface of the blade, at the edge of where the little bit was missing...either the damage to the blade somehow melted a bit of the metal back onto the blade...OR...some clever guy was trying to fill the chip with rod, or it randomly fell onto a torch...most likely it was aliens. These could be pretty and more even...thinking of going in with a tiny round file to clean them up a bit...but already they cut well.

The size and shape was just a result of the notch that was already there. I guess I could have went bigger.

Hi James,

The fine phillips from the outrider is probably loose and moves freely because there isn't enough tension on the backspring. If you notice the end part where the phillips sit on the outrider is a bit higher compared to the backspring part where the magnifying glass sits...

Putting washers to compensate for tool width is to prevent side to side play...

Wow the in-line phillips and backspring shape has evolved again... New info for me...

Here's a comparison pic of the same in-line phillips layer I dissambled in the past..

I don't know why there is a notch on the spring on mine...almost looks like a slide lock notch.  I was expecting a spring more like the one found under the gray mag glass...and now I see there are at least 3 types...

Would it help to put back a little more tension on the spring if that part in the spring is removed?

Ah...what I mean is that the fine phillips is loose and moves..the regular phillips is tight...so removing that piece wouldn't effect things I don't think...but I might be confused!

Hey now...yeah ok then that little part on the spring doesn't really effect it...basically it needs a little more material on the surface of the spring that touches the tool (or on both sides of the tool that touch the spring when opened or closed)

Ah well... Was hoping if that notch was taken out, the fine phillips pushed all the way down, then the part on the fine phillips will push down on the spring end and add some tension, in addition to lowering down the exposed hook...

Hats of to you for a challenging build... Really can't wait to see the results.

Finally finished my project. A retro looking 91mm Golfer.

Basically tore down a Compact, removed the multi-purpose hook, replaced the scissors backspring with an older style, replaced spacer/keyring attachment with spacer/no keyring attachment, replaced corkscrew with phillips and slapped some custom wood scales made by a friend.

This was my first attempt at through peening. Not 100% perfect... Sigh... I gotta admit,  I still need a lot of work to improve my peening. Also messed up the top scale around the shield area during fine sanding/finishing.

Idea behind this build was to look for a 2 layer edc alternative if pocket space was an issue for the orange Yeoman.

Was really looking forward to edc this baby, but it will have to wait. Am sending this to my friend (who did the custom scales) for re-stamp pressing of the Vic Shield.

Hmmm, now got me thinking... An 84mm modern golfer with similar tools such as this would be an even better alternative to the Yeoman. Hahaha... Will add it to my list of mod projects...

What wood is this? Looks almost like alder...

Great R&D.  Next time you can peen first then ship it off for the emblem.

I really wanna try some wood scales...I have a bunch of woods here from guitar building, purpleheart, ebony, various mahogany, maple, ash. I think I can route a clean channel in the scale for tweezers/toothpick using a Dremil router base and a guide...but looking at a factory scale I notice the "roof" of the tweezers slot is higher in the middle (allowing the tweezers to expand slightly).  Not sure of any precise way to do that arch.
