Hi from Johanesburg, South Africa
on: June 20, 2014, 11:55:05 AM
Hi All,

First off I'd like to send a special thanks to Chako for his wonderful series of articles on Leatherman Tools and their history as this was my inspiration to join this forum. I was looking everywhere for a sort of wiki that had more in depth information on this sort of thing but Chako's info was mind blowing. So thanks a million man. Your collection is unbelievable but your information and knowledge are beyond words.

I am an avid aquarium hobbyist so a MT of some kind is always welcome because when doing maintenance on any of my three aquariums, 55 gallon, 220 gallon and 75 gallon something is always needed and a MT seems to be 10x more efficient in getting the work done. Even changing a plug or bed lamp switch is is done in a matter of minutes without having to move an inch from where you are.

My story begins from August 2013 when my Aunt arrived from a holiday in Switzerland bringing me back an original Vic SAK Tinker Small, prior to this I had always wanted but never found the time or made a concerted effort to buy a SAK. I appreciated it for the first 2 weeks of ownership always playing with it and looking for every possible opportunity to make use of it and soon something hit me I needed scissors. This was either the worst or best moment in this saga because once I went online and saw how many SAK's were available I was literally blown away.

I now decided to take a trip to my local Victorinox dealer and purchased Rose Vic Classic for my 10 yr old niece, a Minichamp for me(I wanted the pen and scissors) and a Maglite Solitaire non-LED( I was such a NOOB!!). A Vic Tinker Deluxe in the new week because it had scissors and pliers :o. The following week I am back at the shop for a Swiss Card and I really wanted a full set of pliers so I took the LM Wingman it was the cheapest full size LM at the time and so began another descent for me into depravity. LEATHERMAN TOOLS :multi:

A lot of compulsive buying went down in the months between October 2013 and June 2014. I owned and bought a variety of MT's and Torches the list is as follows starting with Victorinox:
3 x Swiss Card Lites (2 of them were given as gifts)
Classic
Classic Rose (Gifted to my niece)
Signature Lite
Mini Champ(Gifted to my niece)
Tinker Small(my first Vic)
Tinker deluxe
Climber Eco line
Swiss Champ(gifted to a very good friend because I owed him for a lot back in my younger days and don't think money will ever pay it back but I hope he carries it on him and will help him out in many pinches for the future)
One hand Serrated Sentinel
Locksmith

Leatherman:
Micra
Style CS
Style PS
Squirt S4 pink(Another one for my niece)
Squirt PS(My brother stole this one from me)
Squirt ES
Freestyle CX
Skeletool CX
Wingman (gifted to my cousin)
Rebar
Wave
Fuse (Gifted to my brother)
Supertool 300
Surge 2013 model
Leatherman Piranha

Torches:
Maglite Solitaire
Maglite PRO LED +
LED LENSER M5
LED LENSER I5E
COAST G10
COAST G19
Not really big into torches as you may notice.

In terms of pocket knives I lean towards Victorinox but in terms of a pliers based tool I tend to favour Leatherman as it is much easier for me work with when I have gloves(which is a lot when I am working with my aquariums) or if my nails are wet, cut short etc. and unable to reach SAK tools or the tools found on the Vic Spirit and SwissTool.

So basically in a nutshell this is me:
 :multi: :climber:

Hope to have loads of fun with you guys.

:D Thanks, I still want to add a Charge TTi, OHT and some BO tools to the collection but seriously I don't have a problem. Its not like I am addicted to MT's or anything ok.  :ahhh. Denial is a river in Egypt.

Will Post pics later tonight of everything that I have.

Welcome,  great collection you have going there.

Chako also is solely responsible for me finding my way here to MTO,  his pictures showed up in a Google image search, led me here, and the rest is history
If I can help, let me know

welcome mate
Solving problems you didn't know you had in the most obscure way possible

"And now, it's time to hand this over to our tame race axe driver. Some say, he can live in the forest for six months at a time without food, and he knows of a secret tribe of only women where he is their God. All we know is, he's call the Styx!" - TazzieRob

Greetings and Welcome, I'd also like to see in a years time what your collection looks like.  It also seems as tho your niece has quite a nice little collection as well.  Is she using them or are they for display purposes?  Great to have you with us  :salute:

My niece mostly keeps them for display purposes but she does carry them around with her at times to show off to her friends especially the pinkish ones. She's 10years old so I don't think she can completely use them for the extent that they were built for but that being said she has come home a few times and told me about some weird situations in which they came in handy.

In all honesty I have no idea what I was looking for or how I even came to find Chako's great list of articles. LOL must've been a twist of fate that led me here.
