Sell the idea of tool carry to a non believer?
on: June 30, 2014, 06:10:59 PM
Most of us here are practical, prepared men and women who already know the value of a good sak or mt, but we are very much in the minority sadly these days :(

So if you came across someone you thought would be receptive to carrying a sak ect, how would you make your case? :)

I agree. No case needs to be made, just give them a classic and let the SAK speak for itself. Maybe a Spartan if you think they would use something a bit bigger.

Exactly this. Give them a Classic or Micra. Wait. They will eventually realize the usefullness. Or they're not paying attention. :)

There is a maintenance guy on a property I work on who I have tried to give a MT to for years.  He wont take it because "he doesn't carry tools in his pockets or on his belt".  He say's he's never far from his tool box also so there is really no need.  I have tried to give him a simple SAK but again he's just not interested.  I wait for him to need something while I'm on property so I can hand him a MT and walk away.

I have given my female friends tools and also to my oldest daughter was well.  They all love them and use them daily and one recently gifted her Style CS to her brother in law.  I replaced it with a Micra and she was stoked.

I had one property management guy say he had a LM but he kept it in his truck.  There are just some out there that want to wait till they NEED it.

Attach a SAK classic to their keys without their acknowledge, people like them are too lazy to take it off.

Hum...

Depends on the person I suppose...  My son: He'll never carry an MT.   :(  He's able to fix things and has good basic skills but he simply has no interest in fixing something unless there's no other way.

...but I keep trying. :)

Before I got into my sak use for everyday carry, I carried a leatherman pst daily from about 94-99.  My father in law(a machiniest) would tell me if he needed a tool he would go to his big toolbox to retrieve a proper tool.

At the time he carried only a small single bladed locking knife.

About a year after I started my SAK phase I gifted him a Vic Tinker/classic combo new in package for his birthday.  He carries that tinker everyday and always talks about using it in various situations.  He only uses all the tools but the big blade.  He saves the sharp large blade for when he really needs a sharp knife

Give him a non-twist off top beer and his kid a battery operated toy car (which now are held in the box with wire and screws).

Been doing that with my Dad for 20 years. Well, started 20 years ago. I've given it up as a lost cause.

On the other hand, my Mother, on meeting my first Leatherman said "cool!" and she's settled on an older Gerber, 600 series I think.

Wait till the need a particular tool then flaunt it in front of them saying this would come in hand right about now...
Then mention "I sell these."

+2.

For a slightly different tack, there are many, many true stories that support the "Knives Save Lives" claim.  Of course I'm preaching to the choir here, but something like a Classic, small stockman, Micra, etc. weighs next to nothing and takes up almost no room in a pocket or purse, yet is useful for everyday functions while also making one better prepared for an emergency.

This is definitely one of those "you can lead a horse to water but you can't force it to drink" kind of things, though.

My dad has been a repairman for his whole life.  Copiers, TVs, dental equipment and now the large money counters at the casino.  He calls multitools "gimmick" tools and does not use them.  He always uses what he calls "real tools".  He is even given free multis at the different training seminars he's had to go through.  He also says none of the guys he works with carry or use them.
I think it's partly because he uses tools hard enough to break even quality multis on a regular basis and he's never far from his tools.  Brings his tool bag to every call, has a large bag in his car and lots of tools at home in the garage and basement.

You can make a suggestion, but beware that prosthelytizing (of any idea) can easily become pushy and obnoxious.

People are more open to carrying something that is easy to carry.   Make a gift item small and lightweight if you intend someone to carry it on their person.

Recently, I gave a friend a small Nite-Ize DoohicKey for his key ring while showing him that I carry the same on my key ring and explaining how my wife uses one, too.  He installed the DoohicKey on his key ring and the DoohicKey's wire gate clip made it so easy.

^^This!  If you give both at the same time, he'll need the beer after trying to get the toy out.  Hand him a Super Tinker (or similar) and he'll see that it will do both wonderfully.

You can't change someone's heart.  You can only share the truth, and they can either embrace it or remain in darkness.

I find this to be true about a lot of things but in time you can change some come to the light.

When I started at the plant where I work 15 years ago I was the only mechanic who has a MT (a Leatherman PST)
Now quite a few carry one.

I advocate a different path.  Give them a multitool like a Micra or a Style CS.  Then occassionally you will need to ask to use it so they always remember to bring it with them.  Then make positive comments about how useful it is when you use it before handing it back to them.

Starting out small with a freebie and ensuring they have it with them and use it is also a basic tenet of the drug trade.  Remember, you are trying to start and then reinforce the behavior you want repeated.  Force is not helpful, but psychology often is successful.  In most cases they never see it coming....... :D
