I know this has been asked before but I don't remember where or when, so I'm asking again, why, was, or will there ever be a chat room or box for the forum? What would have to be done? Ok, I think I got all the "W's" for a question, lol. JR

There was. It was popular at first but it died off and caused a bunch of problems so we got rid of it.  Then we tried it again a different way while later with much the same results.

I was thinking of starting a new thread like this but I thought some of the newer folks that weren't around last year might like to read some of the earlier questions and answers.

So, in honor of the 9th Anniversary, who has a question about Multitool.org they were afraid to ask?  :D

When were you faced with a situation that first made you decide to ban someone?
as in how long had the forum been up and running

Hey Def, with the bumps on this thread, I picked it up and read much on the way through...what a great idea!

I'm one of the noobs, but reading through this thread and it's multiple branches provided good info and interesting insight into MTO.

FWIW, SAKs are what brought me in as a lurker last year and finally caused me to join the group.  I don't have any burning questions for you at this point, but probably will has time goes on.  Thanks...and happy anniversary!

                  :2tu:

Oh yeah, I enjoyed the thread on the LM Wingman.  I have one through Home Depot's Black Friday sale...but it's an indoor MT only, and only gets occasional use.  For weather like you mentioned, my Mr. Pinchy is the only tool that has held up to salt water environments like you encounter...and I still have to clean and oil it, and dry it's sheath regularly to keep it in good condition.

I'll assume you aren't talking about banning spammers, but actually contributing members, and the odd thing is, I don't recall who was the first ban.  The first ban I do remember wasn't actually me doing the banning, but I was involved.

There was a member that we nowadays refer to as the Copycat as he joined here, then started a site with a virtually identical domain as us, claimed he wasn't copying us, took a lot of the info that was posted here, put it on his site, then spent a lot of time advertising and promoting his site here and never bothering to link back.  As if that wasn't bad enough, he then started sending abusive PM's to J-Sews, largely complaining about me, to the point where Bob (J-Sews) felt the need to ban him.

As with most decisions to ban members, there was a large thread in the ultra secret Mod forum where we discussed how we could remedy the situation here, and how we could help him with his site and still protect MTO at the same time. In the end he decided he'd rather be abusive and set out on his own, still living on MTO's coat tails with a very similar domain rather than be a well respected member here.

I hate banning people.  I really do.  I take it as a personal failure when we can't keep someone around, and we honestly go to every effort to keep people here and respect their opinions.  Still, the one thing I hate more than banning people is having them screw other members over repeatedly, and I have to say, more people have been banned for repeated bad trades than anything else.

That is a long running joke, and trust me, you don't want an answer to that.  But, since I promised to answer any question....  here goes.

Inky and I have a strange relationship, started many years ago on Knifeforums.  We have a lot of bizarre inside jokes, to the point where all you have to do is say "Tamiker" to him and he'll probably laugh.  Or "Undevelopable."

One day, for really no reason, he asked me out of the blue if my grandmother could play the piano.  He would often ask seemingly odd questions like that just to see how I would respond.  In this case I said something like "probably not too well because she's dead."

So, he started that thread, wanted to get as many people involved as possible, then finally have me answer "she can't play piano because she's dead" just to screw with everyone on the forum.  I held off answering so we could sucker as many people in as possible, then forgot about it, then wanted to build it up a bit more each time it was bumped up, then eventually forgot about it again....

Timing is everything in comedy and I'm pretty sure the timing for that thread is long gone now....

Is Def your nickname or is it short for something ?

Years ago (late 90's) it was common to hang out in chat rooms.  I used to visit The Globe and hang out in a chat room called The Tap.  In those days, no one used their real names, and everyone had cool screen names, and I tried a number of different ones.  At the time I was working high risk security stuff and tried to register with names like Warrior or Protector or something.  Most were taken and I finally settled on The_Defender.  Folks there called me Def for short.

I registered as Defender on Knifeforums and was reasonably well known there after many years, and I was even a moderator there for a while.  When I started MTO I used the same name as I was also bringing a bunch of KF guys with me and I felt that a recognizable name would be beneficial.

When I started going to SHOT and dealing with people outside of the forum (marketers for most of the big companies) it was difficult and awkward to explain that I was Defender on the forum, so I changed my account to show my real name to make it easier for outside people looking in to know who I am.  I still sign every post as Def because that's still how a lot of people know me, and I'm a sucker for tradition.

In fact, I got so used to signing Def at the end of posts, I often found myself doing it when I was using other accounts to argue with myself in the early days- a dead giveaway for which other accounts were actually me!  :D

I have one for ya Boss:

If you could choose a major manufacturer of MTs or SAKs that you could influence to take your advice, which company would it be?

If I was to pick any one manufacturer it would probably be CRKT.  I like the way they give designers credit and don't try to dress up mediocre designs by sneaking in high end materials to raise the price.

That having been said, whether you believe it or not, we absolutely have influenced all of the major manufacturers.

Leatherman "coincidentally" came out with the Freestyle shortly after someone here cut the carabiner off a Skeletool.  Ditto for the Style CS and a few other models.

Gerber put the Shard into full production largely because of our influence, and the 2D Phillips has largely disappeared from their lineup because we said we didn't like it.

CRKT produced Ray Kirk's Ring Tool as the KERT after I introduced them all to eachother.

Don't think we don't have influence just because we don't get credit!  :P

Nope.  I don't personally have much to offer them.  Without all of you I'm pretty worthless to any company.

Now I am paying attention, maybe I will learn something!

Love the forum. I've just been a little too swamped these days to spend much time here.
