mp3 players

I have a new mp3 player on the way that I think I'm going to really like.  It's a 4GB Sandisk Sansa e260 I bought from Woot! for $45.  I like the price, of course, but also the screen size (for photos and small vid clips), the FM radio, and the expandability of the built-in microSD drive.

For those of you who have mp3 players, what make/model do you prefer and why?

I've an old Sony NW-E002, it lacks all he latest feature's like screen's and whatnot, but it's a damn site more reliable than the 2 ipod's I've killed

That Sony looks nice and portable.  I'm replacing a Sansa m250 (2GB).  Actually, it gets passed on to my lovely wife.

That has a hard drive, correct?  I somehow never thought it was a good idea to carry a mechanical hard drive around like that.  It's good to hear that it's been reliable.

It does yes.  I have never had any problems with it and I must have had it 3 years now.  Sound quality is pretty good to.

30Gb iPod for me. Suits me just fine, but then again it tends to live in my bag and only get used when I'm on trains or at work, so it doesn't need to be particularly tough or anything.

I couldn't live with the ear bud things though, so I forked out for some Bang & Olufsen headphones which are much more comfortable.

I hear you on the headphones.  I have some Sennheiser PX200 headphones on the way to replace the buds.

That's what I liked about the B&O phones. They are in-ear, but you get the clever "frames" to fit them to your ear so you don't have to jam them half way down your inner ear to stay put

I'd definitely recommend them, I've had these for a few years now and still love 'em.

I like my sound to be more "full" (or at least a flatter response), and all the "in the ear" 'phones I've tried have been a bit lacking in the lower frequencies.

Yes, but not as much as some of the other high-end gear though.

I paid about £90, but that was from a B&O shop (I oculdn't wait ), but I've seen non-suspect ones going for around £60 online.

The problem with these things are that there are so many knock-offs around that you need to be careful. I know that ebay has had real problems with people selling the fakes, so be careful if you see them for £20-£30, they could be cheap copies.

Sorry - yes these are the A8s - and the sound quality is excellent I agree. Very nice leather sheath included too.

Terry- I have the Sansa e260 and I've been using it since January (or so) when I got it in preparation for the SHOT Show.  I was looking for voice recorders until I decided dedicated voice recorders are over priced for a small amount of memory.  Getting an mp3 player that had a built in voice recorder solved that problem.  I got mine for about the same price that you got yours, and at the time it was listed around $150 everywhere else, so I sure as heck wasn't complaining!



I find the video software is a little choppy/useless, so if you manage to figure out a way to make it work, let me know- although, I don't see much reason to use the video feature since my PDA phone has a bigger screen for videos, and I already have it everywhere with me anyway.  Of course, I can also use my phone for playing mp3's too...

The e260 is a great machine- amazingly tiny, battery life is good and pretty darned tough.  Good choice!

Sweet!  Thanks for the picture, that really puts it in perspective for me.

I don't plan to put any video on there but some small clips I've taken of the dogs and relatives from my camera.  At 15fps, I'm not expecting the video to be too great. 

I'll be using it mostly for music and photos to show to friends.  It should be up to that task.  I'm really looking forward to the expandability of the music selection with the microSD slot.  My phone has a microSD slot that I put mp3s on, so I'm already geared up.  15-20 hours of battery life is certainly nothing to complain about either!  It will be nice to not have to use my phone's batteries for music play.

Yeah, the battery life is great on it.  I really like it for that, especially considering that my phone's battery doesn't last anywhere near that long.

The menu could use a little work on the Sansa- I find it's a bit confusing to get everything moving the way you want it, but it's ok once you get used to it.  Also, make sure to lock it since the buttons are easily pressed when it's bouncing around in your pocket.  That makes it a real pain the butt when you want to adjust the volume because one song is louder than the one before it.

I know you didn't ask me, but I'm gonna give my $.02 anyway... 

I use WinAmp with everything, mp3 players included.  I'm sure this one will be no different.

Winamp remote is especially kick-ass.

Actually, iTunes is one of the many reasons that I don't use iPods.  I hate proprietary software.

Def, have you looked into putting Rockbox firmware on your Sansa?  It will give you many more options than stock.
