how many mt have carbide inserts?
on: June 19, 2008, 06:28:52 AM
From what I can see only 2 tools ever had carbide inserts, I want to get another MT and would like this feacher, is it only the legend 800 and the 700 urban legend that had them and did any other manufacturer make one?

As far as I know, it was only Gerber that had that feature.

I can't recall seeing any others anyway.
I'm back!!

Hey sixgun, all the newly made 600 series multi-pliers have carbide inserts now. They just started making them that way in the last year or so. Blunt nose and needlenose pliers both have the inserts.

In order to be certain of having the right tool for every job.........one must first acquire a lot of tools

I've seen a rapala fishing plier with carbide insert, but I don't think that count as a multitool unless you buy rapala's ad (rapala lure tuning tool, split shot crimper, line/hook cutter etc., then you look at the instructions inside the package, everything can be done with a $2 plier).

While this is an old thread, I was under the impression carbide inserts with Gerber multi tools, specifically the MP600's started sometime in 2010.  Based on what was said here, Gerber may have started using  carbide inserts as of 2007.

Any thoughts on this Chako or anyone else?

I believe the original West Marine BlackTip MT (made by SOG) had carbide cutters.  These are quite rare, because West Marine recalled them all soon after they started selling them due to failures (breakage)  of the plier heads.

Here is an MTo thread with some info & photos:

Thank you for that information, I never knew SOG had multi tools with carbide inserts.    Unless the intention is to sell, given the risk I wouldn't want to own those.

No worries, happy to help.

Given their rarity and high price I don't think many people would be carrying a Carbide Cutter Blacktip as a daily user.  In fact I think most are safe, and are now shelf queens in collections by now (I know mine are ;)  )
