Leatherman military folding knife -- a fake?
on: July 15, 2014, 02:45:40 AM
Hi all, I'm new here so I hope this is the right place to post this.  (And I hope it's not a stupid question.)

I found a Leatherman folding military knife on eBay a couple years ago (model 315) for really cheap.  I snatched it up, and it came in a Leatherman box, has Leatherman stamped on it, and it seemed like a good quality knife.  (I gave it to my brother-in-law a while back.)  Here's a link to a picture of it:

http://t2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcT78bHKm9Cc-IasscSX0OdkZivYmtVN5C1zKye_n2KADNVgu8SNdw

The thing is, I can't find any mention of it on the Leatherman website.  Has anyone seen one of these knives?  Is it a real Leatherman?  If it's a knockoff, it's really good quality -- the knife is well-made.

Yup a fake. Not even a copy of a existing tool either. they just stole the name and used it on something else.

Thanks enki_ck and captain spaulding!  It was kind of a neat-looking knife, haven't seen anything else like that.

If it is dirt cheap, I would pick one up...but then I do like the fakes as a conversation piece if nothing else.

Chako, I don't remember what I paid for it, but it was definitely under $5 (including shipping).  Haven't seen one on eBay since then.

For the price you paid...that is ok in my books.

I personally dislike the fakes that try hard to represent something they aren't. Especially the ones with the original company manufacturer branded on them.

On the other hand, I do like them as a cautionary tale, and an educational prop. I have a thread about a very close fake of the Gerber MP600 D.E.T in the Gerber section.

With that said, plenty of the knock offs don't go as far, satisfied with making a duplicate looking tool minus the OEM markings. Oddly enough, I don't mind those as much, even though it is still a dirty business no matter how one looks at it.

Chako - thanks for the link to those Leatherman articles.  I'd never seen most of those (especially the gardening/hunting ones) and the Crunch is one that I think will always be on my wish list.

it actually wasn't a bad quality knife from what I remember.  sharp blade, good saw, nice thumb studs.  for a few bucks, a decent deal.  but definitely no leatherman.
