Oh I agree that there's no substitute for proper training and experience. My son recently did his Bikeability and I was impressed with the level of coaching the kids got :)

He's 11 and has his off moments but is a pretty competent cyclist, certainly a lot better than most adults and motorists. I've told him the only way to be safe is to treat everyone like there an idiot, which is funnily enough what my dad told me all those years ago :D

Edinburgh got quite good about marking out cycle lanes on a lot of the busier roads, but have totally failed to enforce them so far to many drivers simply ignore the fact they exist.  Really hacks me off TBH. >:(

Paul I do have a confession, I found my mountain bike in the back of my lock up garage the other day. I say 'my mountain bike' , well  I brought it about 5 years ago at a bootfair thinking I could go out with the kids on a weekend etc. in a hope and dream of fitness, but I've not ridden it after the first day I got it.
then on Monday I did start going round the block 'with dog in tow', spurred on by your get fit campaign. so I'm watching this thread with interest.
will Zed *get back on the horse* so to speak ?
should a silly old chap, with limited coordination, like me, even attempt cycling?
should I get a helmet ? lol
and maybe knee pads ?

Oh ill be straight back on my bike  :salute: ive not been off a bike since aged 6 and this isnt the first time ive crashed or been hit ,i gave up bmx racing aged 38 as too many broken bones and metal plates,this shook me up more as didnt see it coming but nothing will keep me away from my beloved bikes  :salute:
