Just noticed another difference, my 99 wave has no arrow pointing to the hard wire notch but the 03 has  :tu:
Given the differences of the 3, I prefer my '98 Wave. I'm so glad to have an original in MINT condition  :D

I do kind of like the extra snap when opening the handles on my 03 but the 99 is the same as my old 98 I had so retiring that one and I'll use the 03  :tu:

Original Wave 0800 (both handles) no inside tab, no "jimping" on serrated blade spine, no arrow on hard wire cutter, rough end caps, LM USA on plier.

Nice one Aloha :tu:

I blame thank Zed for this.  I wasn't looking till this thread and it's been nagging me.  Thankfully I can now put this to rest.

Thanks ZED  :tu:

I've also got a newer and older old style wave, I think the tab on the newer ones acts like a spring, there's a similar device on the rebar. My newer one with the tab doesn't have the rattle of the older one, they're both in unused condition. The photo shows the groves on the plier head legs on the newer one, the forked tab or spring fits into these grooves, gripping the plier head. You can just see the forked end poking out.

I think it's a spring that works so that as the handles open, the spring is forced apart effectively by the ramping action of the raised portions cast/forged(?) into the plier head.

It is part of the blade lock.
