SilverTech Signature Lite battery failure
on: August 07, 2014, 05:41:29 PM
Going through my collection and I find my SilverTech Signature Lite has a swollen battery and acid damage to the inside of the scale. Anyone else have a problem with the newer style 389 battery led light like this?

I am sure the damage is not warranty repairable. I guess this post is just a warning to all collectors and users alike that have these newer style "fat" battery led lights. Make sure you check them often or remove them for storage.

I have an Altimeter, I keep the battery removed, however, I never even thought about my 58mm LED lights   I am off to fix that now.

Sorry this happened, but thank you for pointing it out for others.
If I can help, let me know

DO preserve battery life by switching off a device and removing the batteries when it is not being used, and is not expected to be used for extended periods of time.

Sorry mate for what happened, but you cannot fault Vic for that. It is pretty much true for any device, especially when using poorer batteries... I think i ruined dozens of toys, games and flashlights like this until I got the lesson...

That battery really did a number on that scale. It's a painful reminder to anyone with electronics.

The battery compartment did go down some after I removed the bad battery. I have never seen any other led light batteries do this, that is why I am wondering if it has something to do with the battery size since it was changed for the more powerful white led when they came out. I do not have a new battery to check but am hoping the led light still works and the battery compartment is still tight enough to contact the battery properly.

Same thing happened to my oldest son's SilverTech Signature Lite, I did find out before there was much damage.

Still, after that I decided I would never get a SAK with a battery anymore, I know Victorinox is not to blame for this, but in my opinion a knife should be something that you can put in a drawer, and years later your great-great-grandson should be able to find it and use it, if you know what I mean  ;).

This sums up how I feel about it as well. I have too many things going on to worry about taking batteries out of my SAKs to store them. I've never owned a SAK with a battery and don't ever plan on it.

Yeah, this is kinda how I feel too...my SW radios and lights are already enough trouble to remember.

I bought my midnite manager used for a few bucks at a flea market.  When I opened the battery compartment, the battery was leaked with corrosion on the inside.

I made a paste with baking soda and water and scrubbed the components with a toothbrush rinsed and let it dry in the sun.

When I replaced the battery, it worked and now I use it on a regular basis.

Bought a used one with similar damage. Thought it cracked and someone tried to melt it back together, seems this is the culprit. The LED motherboard was in need of some cleaning as well as it's terminal, still works.

Yeah you got to be careful with the batteries, even with quality batteries. Not just from batteries spilling their guts, also from oxidation on the battery and terminal.

Still love me the electronic SAKs. The 58mm and 91mm with electronic scales are still my go to EDC SAKS. Couldn't live without my 91mm's watch or my 58mm's white LED.
