Interesting Gerber
on: August 11, 2014, 08:21:26 AM
Can anybody shed some light on this interesting Gerber on ebay? Never seen one like it before but then again I'm not all that knowledgeable about Gerber tools. The only reason I even noticed it was because the seller put "Leatherman" in the title.

It's item number 201145004966

Thanks

That's a Gerber Multi-Plier version 5 (aka "Mr Pinchy" ) tool, but you are probably asking about the two-pronged implement.  I was quite curious about it myself, so I'm intending on upping my current bid hoping to win it so I can see for myself.

My current theory is that it is a golfer's divot tool, as the tips of the prongs don't look sharp enough to use as a fork.

I have no idea whether it is a genuine Gerber component or a mod (I am guessing more likely a home-brew mod, as this is the only one I've ever seen, and I've been following Mr Pinchies quite closely for a while now).

Anyone else have some thoughts/theories/ideas ?

Thanks for the reply Greg. My first thought was a divot tool as well but my google search came up dry. Good luck with the auction, I've no intent to bid, just curious. If it is a custom mod, it looks pretty good to me.

I'm right on exactly what you said.

I agree with everything you already mentioned unless this is some super rare model we did not know exist.

The old mr. pinchies are incredibly easy to mod.

They never show the tool completely closed which leads me to believe it might not close properly and be a aftermarket addition.

I think the tool spans both interior handle slots, like the Trailguide model. It is plausible that it is a golf model.

Chip fork!  :D :D :D

I knew Leatherman weren't imaginative enough to put a fork in the Flair on their own merit, and they'd have had to copy some sort of Gerber - but I never knew which one it was until today

I emailed the seller earlier today. What a  nice bloke he is.
They were purchased off a retired sales manager for Gerber. - so could well be a prototype!!
I don't claim to know it all, but what I do know is right.

Interesting one.

I'd say divot tool too, was my first thought.

I'll add the pics from the auction here for later reference. Good luck with the bidding, Greg. :tu:

I retract this.   :D

I still think it's aftermarket though.

Hmmm, maybe I should have put those in two different posts as to not offend you. It really wasn't meant to come out saying you bid just because it could be a prototype.

And the second part was just me saying that I know who the high bidder is and a few of us here have bid on the same auctions before

My apologies :salute:

I was in no way offended,  that is the problem with typing, there is no emotion.  I was pointing out that I was part of it, and that I do not feel bad, because I stayed with my budget.

seriously, no offense taken, non at all

I'm sure it happens quite a lot. Quite a few of us are interested in pliery multitools, we cruise the same markets looking for anything interesting, so naturally we end up bidding on the same tools.  As a recent example I've just been outbid on a NIB Gerber evolution MP650 (military), and at $265 you can be almost certain it was another MT collector, quite likely a member of MTo (or at least a lurker).  Like Detron, once something goes above my budget I let it go without rancour, and I hope the winner enjoys it.

exactly!  by staying in budget, I either get it at a price I like, or I do not get it,  much less remorse this way.

I personally think working to a budget is definitely the way to go....
BUT.. That theory goes out the window when it comes to prototypes.
If you miss it - that's it!! No second chances.....Its Gone!!

Budgeting is fine when it's a fairly scarce model, eventually another will come along.

MT'o has just celebrated its 8th anniversary. Yet no one has ever seen this model before....EVER !! And that's on a forum dedicated to MT nuts!!

Chance in a life time chaps!!
