I posted something like this previously and I still think it's a good idea, although I still think using the phone to call for help and provide accurate gps information is probably a better way to use the phone.

My question would be, if you're in a place were survival counts so much why wouldn't you have actual items you need vs a basically useless cell phone (no towers in range). Of course I can see if you were boating and the boat capsized or rolled and you lost stuff into the river, yet being in a boat wouldn't you have stuff that is tied down?

I can't see this being a whole lot useful as you are likely to have plenty of other bits be it car, plane or other available that can do the same tasks before you start thinking about cannibalizing a phone.

Upside is the portability of the phone... I would think that you would gather whatever is useful before setting off on foot however.

Yes, this, while good ideas are only possible in the scenario you are kidnapped and escape in the middle of the jungle because in any other situation you would have something else. I wonder how many people actually find themselves unexpectedly in the middle of nowhere and those who do would probably already know more than that like a military or covert ops.

Anyway you can learn from anything, didnt knew about the trick of using your fingers as a sight when signaling with a mirror.

I think its like anything else mate, its good to know in extremis, but if your likely to be in that situation odds on you'll have other kit with you, but it never hurts to have more possible options available to you

You would be surprised by how many people find themselves in situations like this. Our moutain rescue sevice has lots of cases rvery year where tourists go missing, in sandals, without water, anything,  ... underestimating the dangers the beautiful nature hides.

Much as it pains me to say it, I actually agree with Grant 

A mobile phone is at it's most useful when it's not been mullered for parts and transformed from a high tech communication device, to a pile of scrap which might actually be used to hack some sort of solution to the owners total smurfwitted absence of useful carry.

That said, it is a good showcase of inginuity, adaptability and insight, which in fairness will do more for getting someone out of trouble than a heap of kit and no clue about how to use it to best advantage. Do we want someone so stupid that they wander off into the wilderness with no kit, no clue, and no provisions, just flip flops and bermuda shorts, to actually rejoin society? Maybe that's the whole point in getting them to wreck their phone  Part of me kind of hopes that the dismantling process for the clueless numpty's phone involves lying it orn a rock and repeatedly whacking it with their face as hard as possible

It is interesting to see that article again.  The funny thing is--if some people are so unprepared to go into the wilderness, and getting stuck eventually, I wonder the likelihood that they will actually read that article in advance, and remember anything from it.

Grant does have a great point, and worth repeating--that even you have no 'signal', do send the sms anyway, sometimes for some absurd reason, the phone may have very quick and small reception(without showing it on the signal sign) and something may get thru.

This winter, a medical helicopter crashed in the mountains here. All 7 people survived the crash landing and even the cell phones were still working.
They were found after 2 days: 2 people were dead and 3 had severe hypothermia... they had crashed 20 minutes away from a highway and about 50 km away from two 300.000 + people cities...

I like Al's point about encouraging natural selection

I'd be very disappointed if the good folk on this forum didn't have at least enough kit to survive 72 hours just on there keyrings and to not only be found pretty quick, but to have established a modern utopia in the 2 hours it takes for them to be rescued

Naaahh...I don't worry much about our forum members.  The concentration of kits/tools/gears/junks within our membership must have been unreal, and if 7 of our collector-class member should have climbed into that chopper, they'd probably have enough tools to fix it before it lands...and then land close to those 300,000+ people cities and still have enough tools to supply the whole town.

The potential problem with that is that is not unlikely you could die from hypothermia and or starvation while trying to decide which tool and apocalypse kit to use first
