Schrade ST2-Anyone else as disappointed as I?
on: June 24, 2008, 03:24:07 AM
I have several of these US made Schrade ST2 tools, courtesy of the TSA. Boy, I was really wanting to like them. The tool selection is decent, the removable diamond(?) file a brilliant idea. So close. The tool lock capability is crappy, near useless. Some lock slightly better than others. But none well. Sad thing is, the lock should work better. It's not a complicated design. Was this somehow intentional? Otherwise, very nicely made, solidly constructed. But this little glitch irks me so!

I never really liked the ST2.  Give me a Micra any day.

To add insult to injury, the scissors are left handed! Flashbacks to kindergarten...

My Toughchip's scissors don't perform particularly well. They tend to fold down soft material between the scissor blades. Cardboard and the like tend to cut better. What struck me about Schrade's design was the large assembly which holds the blades together and spring loads the blades. It often hinders insertion of the scissors in tight spots. As you said, the diamond file is handy for blade touch-ups if you need it.

Regards, Bill.

DuctTapeHero is a fan of the ST2, but I just don't like it.   Maybe he'll chime in with some of the things he likes rather than just have the two of us complain about it! :D

I don't regularly use scissors alot, anymore when I need them I use the ones on one of my reg sized MTs.  I do however use my Tough Chip on occasion and really don't have any complaints about it.  But like I said I don't use it much.  Not a bad tool for the $3 I gave for it though ::) :D

I like the (USA-made) ST-2's scissors, but I don't carry them often due to the larger size when folded. Never use the ST-2's other tools because I carry a 4 or 4.5 inch multitool.

Using the left handed ST-2 scissors takes some practice.  I am left handed, but am accustomed to using right hand scissors.

I never noticed the scissors being "left-handed" but I probably will now!!! THANKS!!!!!!  >:( >:( >:(

Anyway, I'll come in and defend it. As Def said, I like the ST2. I think the scissors(at least on mine) cut better than almost any other MT scissors I've seen. The lock kinda sucks on them but with a knife that small I wouldn't be doing anything heavy duty anyway so it wasn't really a problem. Plus after carrying SAK's for years I'm used to carrying knives without locks.

Size wise, yeah it's big but instead of putting it on my keychain I put it in my pocket. It takes up less space in a pocket than some SAK's.
