Looking for a new UK EDC Knife
on: August 27, 2014, 01:54:14 PM
Hi Guys

I'm looking for a knife that conforms with UK laws, I,e Under 3" blade and non-locking. I'm currently using a CRKT Edgie but would prefer something a little slimmer and more pocket knife looking. Must have a pocket clip.

Any ideas

James

Have you checked the UK legal carry thread for ideas?

You'd have to customize a clip onto it but how about a Vic Recruit or Tinker?
I knew my wife was a keeper when she transitioned from calling it a knife thingy to a multi-tool.

I've got a carbon fibre Scandi grind on the way. :ahhh

This is a nice idea.  I like the Alox Solo, or a one layer Pioneer - I've got a blade/combo tool and some scales on the WIP pile at the moment.

For me having an expensive UK legal knife is almost an oxymoron.

You can't carry it everywhere with you, even though it is UK legal.
If a policeman finds you with it, you may get in trouble, even though it is UK legal.
The general public will consider it as a weapon of mass destruction, even though it is UK legal.

So what is the point, unless it is for home use? In which case, you can go for non-UK legal, and have a bigger, locking blade, or a fixed blade.

I have come to the conclusion that the best solution to this is to carry a 2 layer bladed SAK. The blade is friendly, UK legal, and the other tools on the knife make it seem less like a knife and more like a multitool. Wallet friendly (even if it gets lost or confiscated), top quality product, top quality steel for the price, easy to keep sharp and so no hangups about using and abusing it.

That's pretty much my thinking too :)

I do sometimes carry my UKPK, but am hopelessly neurotic every time I do ::)

The Squeak is quite friendly looking as is the Pingu, but you are stuck with a pretty short blade with both of those :(

I had a look at this back around New Years or there abouts... My final conclusion is that most of the modern style UK legal knives still just look too aggressive for sensible carry. I ended up with Classic American style folders being the better alternative( Case if your feeling flush,Rough Rider for killer value for money), or as the guys have said,a SAK. If the pocket clip is a deal breaker, look at what TattooSteve and Syph have done with Alox

I carry whatever I feel comfortable with - the comfort level varies according to where I'm going. That can vary from a fixed blade knife to the Vic Manager on my car keys. Sometimes I'll throw a traditional pocket knife in the pocket along with other gear, as this gives me a knife I don't mind (for example) eating an apple with in public  without causing a stampede. If I'm going out down town for a meal or just a few beers, I might scale down to something like a Gerber Dime.

There's a very big difference between "UK legal" and "public friendly". Decide which criteria you are trying to meet.

I don't tend to use my knives/tools in high visibility areas, but if I did I'd probably carry something different. My carry is often legal, but not necessarily wise to use publically. Traditional pocket knife or SAK is better for "open use", but I still carry and use modern non-locking folders with discretion

How about a Vic Money Clip?  The money clip works just fine as a pocket clip; no modding required.

It does spark of another question though (at least for me), what blade length? I find that relatively few of the new OH slippies have decent length blades as I think 65mm is pretty much the minimum for me :)

Well I think I may have messed up, at least when the wife finds out. I've ordered a Boker Plus XS, I know it looks a bit tacticool but we will have to see how I get on.

Spyderco Pingo, in Orange, no one could ever see that as too Tacticool. Everyone at my work likes it, some have asked where to buy one.
There's lots of good quality UK EDC friendly knifes around.

Subcom, squeak, and nano.....

I don't know where people get the idea that the UK police will take a small non locker off you and lock you away for ever. Complete rubbish which spreads around the interweb with no reason. Please feel free to prove me wrong with reference to a court case etc, not hearsay and Daily Mail articles.

Carry what you want within the law, know your rights, don't act like a smurf and you will be fine.

There's enough horror stories that end in confiscation  of UK legal knives posted on British Blades that they can't all be false. Much like altercations with the police in the States, it sounds as if you're at the mercy of the officer's knowledge of the law.
