Show us your Bushcraft Knife
on: September 13, 2014, 08:07:24 PM
I bought this Blind Horse knife this Spring (the company is now split in Battle Horse Knives and LT Wright Knives). It is a scandi grind in 01 tool steel and I must say I like it a lot and it pair well with my Silver Farmer

Are there other Bushcraft Knives lovers here?

Sure, I love some of the LT wright designs, I got the OFITW and GNS.  Really love the very innovative sheath and GNS is also pretty decent in its own right.

I've been collecting various semi-custom fixed blade for some while, I think Bushcraft is a pretty board term to classify them all, and even though I am no knife expert, I do think most of them are quite usable in the field.

My out-of-doors combo of late is a Vic Farmer paired with a Mora Robust in carbon steel.

I'm becoming more and more fond of Mora.  They seem to strike the perfect balance of utility and price, basically a fixed blade Victorinox.

Hmm, can't seem to find any pics, I'll reconcile soon.

My bushcraft/woods combo is a carbon steel Mora Clipper and a Bahco Laplander. They compliment each other perfectly. As it's past  2 am here, I'll post the pic tomorrow, hopefully. :D

Nice combo Enki!
My other Bushcraft Knife which I had before the BHK is a Mora Companion in Carbon steel, it is a great knife for finer tasks. I like it a lot.

Nice knivies. The type of knife does not matter in bushcraft. Bushcraft is nothing more than the skills used thrive in the bush. You can use any knife. As long as it works for you.

@enki_ck   Nice tools, and matching color too!  I have a silkyboy, and really love how it could saw through wrist sized wood with minimum effort.

@ducttapetech   I like this triple, bushcraft is one of my favorite mora.  Opinel is just opinel, unique in its own right.  And under your influence, I will soon get my first tomahawk!  :D

@Rossko07  Looks good, could you sharpen the edge like a plain edge or you have to use a rod to sharpen the serrated part of edge?

@sparky415   Bolo!  And looks like it's been put through good uses.  I tried to look up the make, and I got a lot of Bolo Yeung pictures.

I watch his video from time to time on youtube, and I always have an impression that he is a pretty sensible man with skills to offer.  I much prefer to trust his ideas and tools than BG stuff.  :tu:

That, my friend, is the best bushcraft tool of the century.  Fire starting, chopping, batoning, cutting, sawing, slicing...you name it, it has it.  Heck, it may even cook a meal for you!  :D :tu:

Not so great pics of mine.

The grey robust and farmer see actual use.  The orange companion and OHT sleep in the BOB.

Well you could piggyback the orange one on the Robust sheath. :D

I have a similar one to the Compainion, actually just rebranded, the Bahco 2444. Same size, weight, ... everything to the Mora Clipper/Companion series, just made for Bahco. :D

The European hardware store chain Bauhaus had a version made for them too, in red.

This piggyback set is probably my least used. The small puuko is actually quite nice, but the larger knife doesn't suit me. The grip is a little large for my hands, and it's far from being a chopping knife too - for me it's between purposes if that makes sense. Too big for "knife" work, yet not meaty enough for "macette/parang" use. In fairness, it's probably just my approach to the tasks at hand though, as these Leukus have been used forever in Scandinavia. I could reshape the handle of the Leuku to suit my grip, but then it wouldn't be retained properly in the sheath  :-\ They are a nice set .... they just don't work well for me personally

As for the make, I don't know. They were sold as hand made in Scandinavia, and I don't doubt that based on the style and build, but there's no makers name anywhere.

Here's the Leuku with some other larger knives.

My favourite, and the one I'd want with me if stranded in the much debated "one knife, woodland scenario" would be the bottom one. It's an Anton De Plessis Warthog by Scorpion Knives, an offshoot of Samuel Staniforths in Sheffield. They're hand made and not cheap, but the two I have (the other is the top knife in the pic - Chris Caine Survival Tool) have been worth every penny. The Warthog is easy to carry, robust, versatile, handles well, and punches well above it's weight. I've crosscut batoned through branches over 3" diameter with no problem, as well as done simple carving/shaving tasks and food prep. The only downside is that its susceptible to corrosion being a carbon steel.

I do have a third knife from Scorpion too, an unscaled "companion" type knife that Farmman got me as a birthday present last year :)
