I personally think a separate rope cutter on a knife is redundant, you can cut it fine/fast with a sharp edge.
one reason Benchmade is popular in many forums is because of the Axis lock, very reliable, safe and fun!

one of the places I order from, Rodger the owner is a real nice guy.

I grew up in chicago, moved to Salem S. Ill (near) and then out here in Oregon, how bout them Cubs! :D

which is the trainer model? and remember amazon uses sub-venders too
and their shipping and warranty policies may not be ideal.

one thing about our banner members (who we like big time) and other popular knife dealers is
they can be trusted if you ever have any problems. nothing sucks more than having a problem
with a product and it not taken care of! ask jzmtl! :-\

I would avoid the Benchmade Ambush, last I recall it had a hollow stop pin that really kicked down it's overall strength to the light duty level.

If you're price range is up to $100 dollars I would avoid the Benchmade Red Class and go with one of their Blue/Black class knives.

Of course, I'm a shill for Spyderco so I really think you should buy one of those.  ;)

also, whats this axis lock thing?

It's a sprung steel cylinder that engages the knife tang to prevent closing unless pulled to the rear. It works really well and other companies have copied the idea in numerous ways.

Here's a link!

::ETA:: I would avoid the Nitrous Stryker due to the liner lock, but that is a personal preference.

but really, the liner lock is just preferance, its every bit as safe as any other kind of lock, right?

that knife seems to meet a lot of my needs, and the griptillian soundslike a good solid knife too, just a trusty nothing special tool.

now one thought about the Griptilian, people (including me) when they get it think the handle (like Noryl GTX) is cheap
it's not. I really does the job for grip, strength, easy clean. but some people just can't get over it :twak:

Depends.

My own personal opinion is that no, the liner lock is not as safe as other locking mechanisms. This sentiment is echoed by a lot of other people but it is still a point of huge debate on any knife forum. My own opinions stems from testing done by a few members over at Bladeforums and my own experiences with liner locks. The biggest weakness is the lack of lateral strength. When torqued laterally most liner locks tend to become very weak and disengage with the slightest amount of applied force to the back of the blade.

Now, as a rule, most users do not cut with the back of the blade and it really won't be an issue during general use. This issue arises when the knife in question enters into the "grey area" of use. Hard cutting, twisting, stabs and general tasks best left to a fixed blade are where the liner is more likely to fail than other mechanisms. I just think it's poor marketing to have a liner-lock knife grouped with other medium/heavy duty blades.

Keep in mind that the liner-lock mechanism is the only type of lock to actually have another lock designed into it to be used at the same time to prevent accidental closing (the CRKT LAWKS).

SOG's arc lock is pretty much the same thing as axis lock, and the one I linked earlier has assist.

I don't have that particular model, but other SOG I played with seems solid. But to be honest I'm not a fan of SOG because of their practice of stamping their name everywhere (like the clip on that one).
