A winter restoration project
on: October 05, 2014, 11:50:46 PM
After watching my son being completely transfixed by these at local rallies I've picked up the first of two Petter A1 stationary engines.

The idea was to buy two and get one decent engine, but the 'rough' one I picked up today is in better mechanical condition than I thought it would be. so I'm now aiming for two running, restored engines that I hope I can show next year.

Anyway a couple of pics

Nothing that can't be cured with a wire brush, acid and shot blasting :)

Ooow, this is gonna be interesting. :2tu:

Looking forward to lots of pics of the engine disassembled and how the restoration progresses. :D

What will you be using it for once you have it fixed?

Nothing much really, I'm going to try to pick up some period tools for it, water pump, generator, table saw, that type of thing. It's just a fun project really

Matthew is 3 and he's completely hypnotized by anything with an engine, he wanted to try taking it apart with his toy tools as soon as he saw it  :)

A friend of mine use to have a small stationary engine.
It was used for entertainment purposes when sitting around the fire with a beer.
You could vibrate yourself over teh cobblestone court while standing on the board it was mounted to and we took terms in trying to set the lowest stable rpm.
Or just listen to the thumpa bada thumpa until the fuel ran low.
I´m looking forward to this project.

Anybody looking for a small air compressor unit? It´s gathering dust in my shop. Pick it up and grab a beer with me.  :pok:

Mark you really need to do as much of the renovation as you can using various 'multis' or SAK's and take pics ;)

Very cool project.

I've always wanted to get hold of a small "Hit and Miss" stationary engine just for giggles. Something very hypnotic about the way they run.

Interesting project, back in high school when in auto class I had to take a little 5hp apart, stripped completely, wash it, reassemble it, then make it run. If You got it to run you passed, if not you pretty much failed.. Well mine purrrred  , anyway, make sure you post pics on your progress! JR

I really want a 'hit and miss' as well, but I'll get this one and the one I'm picking up next weekend out of the way before I attempt to get one.

I also need a trailer with a small winch as well. I pretty much destroyed the boot of my car picking that one up. It broke loose of the ratchet strap when I had to brake heavily. 175kg flying about tends to break stuff  :ahhh

After 7 hours in the car I've got engine number 2 and it's in remarkably good condition

It's sitting under a tarp at the moment, I can't get it into the shed I need to make a new base and get some wheels.

The weight of these small engines is quite scary.

They look interesting, what are they used for?

It looks like it once was used to power a transmission belt drive?
Have fun.

Michael

They were used before electric motors were efficient, the new one was built between 1945 and 1947. They powered a large number of things, water pumps, generators, table saws, various assorted farm equipment, cement mixers.
