Which 58?
on: December 07, 2014, 03:06:07 AM
So if you we're to pick one 58mm SAK which would it be.

No Alox and it must have scissors. Figure if it is going to be always with me on the keychain it should have scissors and the ever so handy scale tools.

Discuss.

Manager.

Its a rambler which rules, and adds tweezers and pen.  If you need a toothpick whittle a sliver off a hunk of wood. :D

I've been go back and forth between a rambler and a rouge for years.

I'm digging the Rouge more lately

I'm gonna have to say Rambler.  It's been getting the most keychain time lately, and honestly the most use as well.

Rambler or Manager, depending on whether you prefer the pen or toothpick.

The Rogue is discontinued right Joel?

Do you Rambler/Manager types get a lot of use from the tiny phillips? I assume that is why you go for the Rambler over the Classic?

Lots of things, especially electronics and kids toys have tiny phillips screws.

If you want to consider discontinued models than the next cool one is the vagabond.  :D

Yeah it is but there not to hard to find. I like it's finger nail cleaner better than the ramblers.

Thats what I was thinking too. Nail cleaner is nice for us worker bees.

The phillips is kid toy sized?! OK new set of rules then.

No Alox, scissors and mini phillips. Nail cleaner would be nice too.

For me it is the Rambler.  That small philips is great to have and is also why I never warmed up to the Classic!  I tried the Manager (cause I didnt have a Rambler around) for awhile but the pen adds alot of bulk to the size of it and never used it.  I also prefer the toothpick over the pen!

Almost every day I find myself wishing I had a toothpick. Stupid busted teeth from a few years teaching combatives.

Not to often I am without a dedicated pen.

So short story long I agree.

Rambler.

Just got one to replace the one I gave to a friend.

There's another thing about the philips. It's magnetic. You can use it to pick up little metal things you drop, like if you drop a needle on a flat surface and just can't get a hold of it.

The cap lifter is Meh, but WILL work. Well... you know... if you're not on your 6th adult beverage. Then it's just a CHALLENGE!! :D

Here's my review of the Rambler.

I was wondering about the mini champ. Prolly to much for a backup keychain SAK?

You'll hear a lot of the guys talk about their wives 'borrowing' their 58mm SAKS. The Rambler is a likely candidate, and like I said, I just replaced one I'd given away. They are also a GREAT first tool. So... get like 5 of them to give to folks. :D

The Minichamp 2 is a little fatty that includes a few extra blades and tools.   I dig mine and kinda go back a forth between a few 58s.  The coke spoon is a neat tool I have used it a few times, the small "package opener" is also a handy tool.  Minichamp original is a 7 blade tool missing the cap lifter but has toothpick vs pen.

Must resist the fat jokes.

Minichamp is out of the running for now. Maybe down the road.

Looking for something a little smaller for permanant keychain duty.

edit; COKE spoon wasn't used for COKE it was used as a large flat driver

Yeah it's rather "big boned" as compared to other 58s.  The Manager or Rambler both excellent choices as well as the Classic SD.  Cant really go wrong keeping it simple and then seeing what you maybe missing or might want additionally on your 58.

I think the scissors are just wonderful for their little size.

Rambler/Manager all the way.
Simply decide toothpick or pen.

The combo caplifter and Philips is sublime and adds extra leverage on the knife and pen.

This is where I am leaning. Just keep using the knife blade for fingernail cleaning like I have the last 40 years or so.

I eliminated the manager only due to the fact that I'm super picky about my pen.

As for the midnite makes... just be sure if you get one, you get a new one with a white LED, not the old red LED. I have a Swisslite with the red LED, and it's next to useless.

Is there a Rambler with a light?

Would love to see the light before I pick one up but they not to expensive.

Is the light model heavy thicker?
