splurge on the CX?
on: July 14, 2008, 07:45:17 AM
i was going to get a skeletool and just wondering if it was really worth it, consider these points

the skeletool CX has upgraded blade to a 154CM blade instead of the 420HC on the standard
the skeletool CX has a combination blade
both of the tools are the same weight, despite the little patch of carbon fiber on the CX
CX has a black finish on it.

let me know, oprice isn't too much of an issue, but i just don't want to be ripped off. Thanks!

For me it was only $10 more so I went for it, but $20 I'll probably pass, since I carry a dedicated knife with good blade steel.

I somehow voted yes when I meant to vote no.

I wouldn't buy the CX if the price was the same. I like the black, but I don't like the combo blade at all.

I like the black color of the CX, but I'd opt for the regular one with its plain edge blade.
In order to be certain of having the right tool for every job.........one must first acquire a lot of tools

If you can hold off a few months and get the FreeStyle instead, that might be an even better option.

The FreeStyle will be the same thing, only with a permanent screwdriver rather than the bit driver, and will be somewhat cheaper still.

The combo blade of the cx is no problem to sharpen on a spyderco sharpmaker.I like the black finish and felt it was worth the extra money. They can be had for very close to the same price if you look around.I say go for the cx.

Well, being the LM fan that I am- I bought both.. I would recommend the SS Skeletool as well. I HATE combo blades and the carbon fiber doesn't really do much- besides cost more! But, if you were to buy a Charge then I'd definitely recommend getting it in titanium rather than aluminum.. It feels that much better in the hand!

I think he meant 20 bucks more for the CX model than the SS one. ;)

I was originally told October for the Freestyle but now I'm hearing it won't be until after the first of the year.  Should be very hot when it arrives and will probably have a street price around $30.

What exactly is the difference between skeletool and freestyle besides the bit holder? Seems really cheap compared with skeletool.

Which one is which? :D

The FreeStyle is the one in the middle, and will likely be identical to the Skeletool except for the bit adaptor, and spare bit holder.  I believe it would be all the same materials (as the standard version) otherwise, as it would probably cost Leatherman more to order a plastic part to replace the aluminum and CF parts found on the Skeletools than it's worth.

I would think they have to order different part anyway, since the spacer hold the extra bit, and freestyle doesn't have one.

I don't think they order that bit- they probably just machine it in house, in which case it's cheaper to make than the standard Skeletool since they get away with one less cutout.

I'm also pretty certain the FreeStyle will have a pocket clip- I think it was just taken off before our imprompyu photo shoot, but I could be wrong.

It seems I am wrong.  According to this thread:

http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,3699.0.html

The insert in the Freestyle will be plastic.

Is the piece on top of zytel spacer metal or zytel as well? On skeletool that part holds the extra bit with spring force so need to be metal, but on freestyle seems there's no need since it's not load bearing and not holding anything.

So the FreeStyle will just have a single Phillips driver (besides the pliers and blade)?

To the OP, get the SS Skeletool.  I have the CX and am probably going to get a SS because I don't like the tungsten coating and prefer the natural look of aluminum and steel.  I also don't like serrated blades.  I don't think I do enough cutting to care about have the designer steel either.

Also, would you rather own the S K E L E TO O L or a free.s.t.y.l.e.   One sounds tough, the other sounds loosey goosey.  :)
