Tramping! Pic heavy!
on: December 30, 2014, 12:56:12 AM
For those not familiar with this word it is a term us Kiwis use for hiking.

Here are some pics from my latest trip: the Casey-Binser; a loop track over the Binser Saddle and Casey Saddle with a stopover at Casey Hut. I think most people do it in the other direction.

Day 1: Andrews Shelter - Binser Saddle - Casey Hut

Walking to the start of the track looking East down the upper Waimakariri River valley:

Looking West back up the valley:

Sugar Loaf on the other side of the river:

Into the mostly Mountain Beech forest:

We didn't see much bird life apart from this inquistive New Zealand robin or toutouwai:

A small clearing near the Binser Saddle:

Looking down into the Poulter River valley:

Descending through Red Beech forest:

Looking up the Poulter River valley:

Peveril Peak on the opposite side:

Walking the Poulter River Track. Note the eroded banks on the other side:Unfortunately I was running out of water and since there were cattle around I didn't fancy drinking from any of the streams.
From the Department of Conservation brochure: "Below the East Branch (and again both sides of Pete Stream) steps of river terraces bear graphic testimony to a landscape that has continued to change since Pleistocene-age glaciers withdrew from this part of the valley. The highest terraces are the remains of the old post-glacial valley floor. With subsequent uplift, the river and side streams have cut down into the outwash gravels, each new course being lower and narrower than the one before."

Here you can see damage from a storm (the lighter-green, smaller bush with dead tree trunks) and an earthquake (the slip up the top):"Across the river on the south-western flanks of Poulter Range, hundreds of hectares of beech forest lie ravaged from a single storm late in 1981 which flattened almost every standing tree on these exposed hillsides."
"Across the river from Aeroplane Flat the very obvious slip at the head of Cleland Stream is a
legacy of an earthquake that in 1929 split Falling Mountain at the head of the Edwards valley."

A closer view of the slip:

Getting back into the forest:

Into some lovely Red Beech:Unfortunately there were many (introduced) mice scurrying around.

Finally after a long day of about 8 hours walking we reached Casey Hut:

Day 2: Casey Hut - Casey Saddle - Andrews Shelter

I really struggled on this trip - my pack was horrendously heavy! One reason was I was carrying a tent in case the hut was full - it's really too heavy to take in a pack. Also I brought lots of heavy food.  Thankfully I had got rid of most of it by now. It looks like maybe it wasn't just the weight in my pack?:

Looking back at the hut:It tried to rain a little. Form here it was a good climb up to Casey Saddle. It was really muggy and rather sweaty work!

Out into the open near the top:

From Casey Saddle I can see Sugar Loaf again:

Looking back the way we had come (through the gap on the right-hand side):

We came across several stacks of traps that DOC must have choppered in:

I think this is the Mountain Daisy Celmisia:

Hallelujah Flat:

Back into the forest - nice burl:

After a long stretch sidling the mountainside we sight the Waimakariri again:

Another robin:

Finally we reach the end of the track:

I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did (but without the blisters and sandfly bites).  :)

A friend (and owner of a broken Wave).

I would like to do another in the area such as Cass-Lagoon after New Year's Eve but I need to
1) recover, and
2) get my pack down to half the weight
first. If you're keen?

It's been at least 15 years since I did that loop.

I'm sort of on call 24/7 for the next couple weeks while others take holidays but I will ask the boss.

What broke on the Wave?

Beautiful pics!

I watched a series called "I shouldnt be alive" and your pics look exactly like one episode where a guy is hiking in the New Zealand mountains and has a fall.  His dog basically saves his life keeping him going and warm at night.  He makes it to one of those sleep cabins and someone gets help for him finally.

It's been at least 15 years since I did that loop.
There are others on the list also such as Hawdon-Edwards and probably a few I don't know about yet.

What broke on the Wave?
I think it was something to do with the pliers and how they fold up, will have to try to get another look at it sometime.

Wow!

New Zealand is such a beautiful place.

Plenty enough sheep to go around. Bring your velcro gloves.

I think they're down Glenorchy way.  ;)

I like that episode. That guy is on a tramping forum I frequent, his account in his own words is an interesting read. I'll try to find a link to it sometime.

It certainly is a mix here - you can be at the beach then drive for an hour or so and go skiing.

Yeah, did quite a bit but over at Franz Josef mostly.

The Germen word "trampen" means hitch-hiking

Gorgeous hike. Reminds me of a book in highschool, they called backpacking; Humping.

Being in 9th grade it was quite hilarious.

Has Noone asked what tools you carried? Or did I miss it?

I also love the Camelbak Chute pictured :D I love them things!

I carried my dedicated tramping knife, a Wenger Ranger 58:
http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,52248.25.html
I didn't use it at all. Just as well, being Official 31-Day SKELETOOL* Challenge month (don't tell Kampfer!).

I think my Camelbak is a Better Bottle (on the hut table), which seems to have been replaced by the Eddy and Groove.   My friend's is in the bird pic - I think it's a Groove.
I actually had a setup on the first day with a molle vest with pouch on one side and Camelbak bottle pouch on the other. Really handy having water, camera, snacks readily accessible without taking my pack off but it was too bulky underneath. I'm going to try to devise a way to connect them to the front of the pack straps/hip belt.

I had a Groove but can't stand the camelback "tips" that you bight down on your teeth with to drink. You drop the bottle in the dirt/sand one time and your dirty for the day.

Also, if your looking for a strapping device you might want to switch to a Nalgene. Their bottles are industructible.

I carried a Nalgene 32 OZ. With a Capcap by HumanGear. And a sleeve with a belt loop. Worked like charm on my back.

I can't tell from the pictures but are you using internal frame packs? Or hybrids? (From what I can see, they don't appear to be external)
