A little trip I did with a friend last weekend at Abel Tasman National Park at the Northern end of the South Island / Te Wai Pounamu, New Zealand. We hired a double kayak from Abel Tasman Kayaks.
My camera isn't waterproof, so I only took photos in calm areas and not out in the open sea (which is a shame).

Firstly, after setting off from Marahau and heading North, a stop for lunch at Observation Beach:

Next stop was to explore a tidal inlet at Frenchman Bay:

Some lucky bugger has a holiday home there (sea access only):

Back out to sea:

Our destination - Te Pukatea Bay:

The campsite is in the trees just off the beach:

A look around the bay early next morning:

A close-up of our vessel:

My cooker:

Next day, a walk around Pitt Head. Firstly, climbing above Te Pukatea Bay. You can just make out our kayak at the edge of the beach. What is that dark thing in the water?:

A ray!:

At Pitt Head, looking East out across Tasman Bay:

In the forest:

New rodent traps being tested by DOC. Each kills about 50 rats/mice/stoats before needing resetting:

Cicada - there were millions of these making one hell of a noise:

Kayakers below:

Torrent Bay:

Looking North to Boundary Bay and further up the coast:

The track takes us down to The Anchorage:

Anchorage "Hut":

Time for a watermelon back at Te Pukatea, courtesy of my Wenger Ranger:

It's missing lots of the journey but I hope you enjoy anyway. :)

I am speechless!  That is simply beautiful!

Your friend is quite attractive- my suggestion is for you to get two single boats next time as a tandem is well known as a "divorce boat" in the kayaking world!  :P

That looks like an awesome journey and the water is spectacular!

I have heard that before, in fact I told her before we set off. I just let her give me directions as she could see the reefs better... and it makes things easier overall.  ;)
I have had an idea about joining two singles together when required with two struts, then unfurl a spinnaker...

We also saw lots of seals on the rocks at a colony and passed through some frolicking in the water.
I think I should look at getting some sort of waterproof camera or camera box. I should probably get my own kayak first.

Now that is a cruel post...as I look outside to my winter desolation landscape.  :D

Beautiful scenery and trip. I can only dream of such a trip myself.

As for camera...I can heartily recommend a Ricoh WG-4. I have one for my motorcycle and it is a great camera.

Very nice.

Much more exotic than the usual Kayaking pictures we see here   :D

It seems that Kayaking is more fun with two people, again.

I would also suggest getting a, cheap, waterproof camera, with a good picture quality and zoom. Ricoh/Pentax, Canon, Nikon, Fuji etc..

For your use you only need it to be properly waterproof for a few metres, so spend more on the quality of the pictures, rather than the depth rating.

Yeah, here too.  It has just warmed up to +2C here so the freezing rain has changed to mere cold smurfing rain.

Looks awesome!

Reminds me of my beaches actually, and how long it's been since I've seen them.

Maybe a gopro could fill your camera needs?

How much was it to rent a kayak though?

I was wondering the same, and I could mount it on the plane when I fly.

How much was it to rent a kayak though?

It was $110NZD per person for two days, sounds expensive but totally worth it. Includes all the gear.

Just to rub it in, those two days were pushing 30ºC and we have had lots on temps in our 20s this summer. Aussies will go "pffft" but that's good for us and I wouldn't want it any hotter.
It's currently 26ºC here now and 31ºC at a town about an hour away.

GoPros are great for some things- for others they are a pain in the arse.

They suck as a still image camera for example, so you'd still need a camera for taking stills.

For kayaking and other long time/distance things they are a bit of a pain in the arse as they have long battery life, which means you generally start them at the beginning then they stop whenever the battery dies.  This is usually about two to two and a half hours with the standard battery and about four and a half with the battery backpack (at least on my Hero2 models- newer models may be different) which is great in theory.  When you get home though you realize that the angle was wrong or that the awesome things you were looking at were off to the side while the GoPro was facing forward and so there's no actual evidence of something cool except some muffled discussion that made it through the waterproof case.  And, you have to go through hours of video just to get to that point.

Here's a video that shows a lengthy (7 or 8 hours I think) trip that we took a couple of years ago:

The camera was set on a ten second delay, so it snapped a pic every ten seconds, but you'll notice the time is out of sync because at one point I took my shirt off and never put it back on, despite what is shown.  All in all, they are good for what they are, but remember there's a reason why there are a buttload of camera men and an even bigger number of editors on every professional production.
