key finder
on: February 02, 2015, 03:14:42 AM
I think this is the best part of the forum to post this.

My DW is having short term memory problems and one thing that occurs very regularly is loss of keys, purse and the like.  I found one set of keys out in the snow today that had been lost just after Christmas (positive was that the fenix E01 and aaa eneloop were as good as new) and shortly after that she came home to report her purse "lost".  As you can appreciate, daily such occurances are very stressful to the household.

Has anyone here used some type of a transponder that would attach to a key ring and would ring when "paged" by a base unit.  I haven't looked around yet but figured someone might have an idea.  I would like at least 3 key chain units and if possible 2 "base" units.  I figure if it was good for about 50 ft it would be satisfactory as most of the time the loss is in or close to the house or another known building.

I'll will post this in another forum also.

Any ideas would be welcome.

Thanks,

John.

I see that ebay has dozens of key finders.  If anyone has experience with a particular model a comment would be appreciated.

Thanks,

John.

Sorry, the last one I used was as a kid, those you'd whistle at and it would give out a beep. Maybe something with GPS locator you could then find with a smartphone or computer?

I recomend Tile.

You can activate them with any phone.

And they will either ring, or you can use Bluetooth to find your lost item.

Plus they are tiny.

Thanks for the answers and ideas.  I ordered a set from ebay (one transmitter and 3 receivers).  Once received I will do a short review to help anyone else with a similar need.

The "nut" on SPAMCORP looks interesting however even if I did carry my phone it's not modern enough for the app.

I did read up about tile but was put off by two things - 1 year battery life (and not replaceable) and the fact that I needed a phone app for it.  I don't usually carry my cell  phone and my wife doesn't have one so it wouldn't work for us.  Simple is better.

I did notice that there were ones available on ebay that respond to a loud clap, whistle or yell - ok till one disturbs the neighbours :)

The ones I ordered are similar to:

Thanks again,

John.

I bought one like those for my missus (she frequently "misplaces" her keys).  It seems to work OK, but the batteries don't last all that long (ie months rather than years), so if it is critical that it works I'd suggest checking the batteries regularly and replacing them before they go flat.
