Broken back lock on a Spyderco
on: March 06, 2015, 07:50:13 AM
You all remember this project knife I bought?  Well it is now "useless" having suffered a broken back lock or something.  I went to depress the lock but with light pressure the blade closed having never touched lock.  Is there any fix?  I wont send it in especially since I got it in foul condition and heavily modified the blade.  I'm guessing the blade pivot area or lock mechanism just wore down finally?  It's a shame since I really liked this battered knife.

Can you take some pictures of the "hammer" portion of the backlock?

The best solution, since you are in the US, is to contact spyderco. I assume that if you have not done anything to the lock, irrespective of how you changed the blade, they should take care of it.

Now, if the actual lock bar is not broken/bent, but the locking parts in the bar and the blade have just worn out a bit (got smoother, making the lock release easier) you may be able to fix them with some filing etc., though it may be hard to get a very solid, non moving lock. also, there may be just some dirt that stops the lock bar from moving (a good wash may help)

As said previously a picture of the issue will help.

Thanks I don't feel right contacting Spyderco since I got the knife in poor condition.  I will get some pictures tomorrow.  I'll also give it a good washing as well.  The blade being pinned as are the scales makes me hesitate to try unpinning the knife.

I'll clean it and take some pics then go from there.

The spring has failed on the lock.  Not a whole lot you can do without taking apart the knife, sorry.

I totally forgot to take photos.  It appears its wear on the blade end where the lock engages ( the notch ). I appreciate the input.

I may take it apart and try to file the blade end or  ??? the pocket clip is nice so I can salvage that and still have gotten my monies worth.

I have talked with Sal the owner of Spyderco and so long as you do not abuse it in a obvious way they are happy to back up there warranty.

Buying old Spydies and having Spyderco sort them out is a bit of a hobby of mine. Well that and being a sexy beast.

Are you sure it's just not dirty.

A little crud can foul a lockback easily.

Hey brother,

Yeah I cleaned it up real nice after dks mentioned it.  Its so hard to take a picture worth posting but it sure does look like the blade is just worn and could possibly be the lock bar as well.  I really cannot see inside but when I close the blade I can see how well worn the material behind the pivot is.

I feel your dilemma mate. :-\  You've got a knife that's obviously had a very hard life and has been pushed to the limit and beyond.  Not only that, but it wasn't even you who did the pushing.  I will say though that I'm not sure what kind of mistreatment could cause the blade to wear out at that point so, no matter what else has been done to the knife, that's an area that should still be in working order.

One part of me says send it in since what appears to have failed it not related to how much abuse the serrated edge took.  I'd imagine the blade was used till it went to crap then the knife was abandoned.  I think I'll send it in with a note stating I'm not the original owner and modified the blade to get it into working order.  It's gives  Spyderco to option like Leatheman to fix or send back.  If it wasn't pinned I'd do the work myself.

Most likely spyderco will tell you that it has reached end of life and you should buy a new one. They are on stingy side as far as warranty goes.
