The Best/Quickest Way to Dull an Edge?
on: March 16, 2015, 03:52:40 AM
I did a search and couldn't find anything!

Call me Crazy but i want to know whats the "best" way to dull a knife/blade/edge.saw/etc...

And I DONT mean taking an angle grinder or file perpendicular to it.  :twak:

For Example, the most common method at least by common knowledge is cutting cardboard box's

But i think spending all day in an attic cutting Metal Duct Tape did a very serious number to my Skeletool. I can see light against its edge all the way down it. And its not sharp enough to cut a towel without a saw motion.....

So cutting rocks isn't the answer you're looking for? Rope has been a real edge killer for me.

I guess its anything harder than the blade

Sandpaper, especially wet'n'dry types.
I don't claim to know it all, but what I do know is right.

Cutting on a China plate tends to to damage the edge.

In normal use I find that when deboning a lot of meat the knives need regular touch-ups through the process. (I use the bottom of a mug for that). The blade gets damaged by cutting/touching bone.

Cutting hay off a PTO or the rollers off a haybine. Dulls them right quick.

I find slicing tomatos is a really quick way to take the edge of a blade. I always have to resharpen afterwards.

I'd love to know why.....

Victorinox makes some serrated kitchen/table knives that would persuade your tomatoes to get sliced by themselves just by looking at it :tu:

@OP: I'm not sure what the question is; is it "what uses dull a knife up real quick" or is it "How do I get a scary sharp knife to calm down a bit without ruining it"? In either case, you could cut some sandpaper with the knife in question, though I'd hate to do that  :ahhh

Thanks firiki, I may look out for a SAK with a serrated blade at some point, I sometimes use the brilliant butter blade on my Monspirit for tomato duty.  :salute:

I don't really use SAKs for foodstuff :ahhh though I have done so. At 5€ a piece (approx.) I think these offer great value for money. They also come in a couple of pointed versions.

I got a couple for my wife who only uses serrated knives ( brrrrr ) as hers were horrible, ground flat with dense, pointy teeth... The only downside is they're somewhat flexible and she's managed to bent one of them slightly. I love the synthetic handle.

Now, to get me those forged Vic kitchen knives (frenchie style handle) I'm lusting after...

They're scary sharp, I can tell you that. I've sliced my thumb open twice while washing them.

I rather like the yellow handle and the red one which is not pictured.

Carpet and lino can be a real git on edges too :(

Especially if you cut it on a concrete floor. There's a story behind it why I always ask my father WHY he needs one of my knives. :ahhh

Yeah I probably should have worded the question better. But it was late

Yall are spot on, looking for jobs that dull a knife the "worst," mods feel free to change it

I never really thought about bit skinning and cleaning an animal really does a number....both my Buck 112 and a Buck Omni Hunter (420HC) dull really quick.

Especially if I dent the blade battoning the pelvic bone in half.............

I used to do a lot of work with ballistic webbing and Kevlar and was always sharpening blades.Utility knife blades had to be replace every couple of days. We ended up using Claus light sheet shears or splicing shears for cutting wire because regular scissors just weren't up to the task. The Kevlar would also eventually wear groves in the guides on the machines. Wiss aviators snips and powered rotary shears were also common for bulk cutting.

Steel pallet banding is another good way to kill a blade. I was working warehouse late one night and all of our stuff gets banded with plastic but I went to unwrap an incoming pallet and just heard that wonderful screech as my knife ran across the banding. Took the tips off all the serrations, good thing it was only a 2$ Sheffield.

For my wood work I keep a couple of second hand butcher knives handy for batoning and splitting out rough shapes, I don't even bother sharpening them any more. The primary grind is enough with out an edge.

Cutting steel wool will dull a blade real quick too, be it a knife or scissors.

I opened a pack of tiles that were wrapped in cling film the other day. That was bad because you couldn't help but catch them.

The worst thing I've ever cut was a synthetic mat you put underneath plastic lagoon linings. I'm not sure what it is, but it's white, fluffy, fibrous and incredibly tough. It gets a bits of grit embedded in it and destroyed the edge on my Wave within about a foot of cutting. I went to cut some bubble wrap open later and couldn't.

Sounds like a fiberglass insulated rubber mat?
