Chinese counterfeit Ontario Rat 1

It looks like the Chinese are now counterfeiting Made in Taiwan Rat Model 1's and selling them for the same price  ???

Seems weird that they would go to the trouble of counterfeiting a $30 knife    ::)

Oh, I was just looking for the derailed thread where we discussed the ONtario Rats to ask exactly this.

I'm knew to knives, so I was looking around eBay for Ontario Rat 1... but there are so many that are sent from China.

So .. should I look for one that's located and will be shipped from the US? How am I to figure which one is a genuine Rat? I'm not going to buy it asap, but I got interested in these because of the recent topics..

Stay away from the ones that say Rat 3 on the blade and you should be good to go.

This is why I normally only buy from reputable dealers.

Crazy thing is a lot of the fakes of different knives could possibly be produced in the same factory as the real ones.

Well, that about the RAT 3, sure.. but what if they show a good picture and then send a fake or something. Yeah, I'll look for reputable dealers, of course, I usually try to find such. Just with me being where I am, it's usually difficult to find people shipping to my place and for reasonable price :D

Anyway, I'll think about it when I decide to buy one :D :tu:

If money can be made by producing and selling a counterfeit, then someone, somewhere, will do it.  It can absolutely reach absurd levels (ask me about fake fountain pens!).

Also, to be perfectly honest the Rat 3 really isn't anything special.  The steel can easily be replaced with 8Cr13MoV and the vast, vast majority of users, even very experienced users, wouldn't be able to tell the difference.  The rest is just making a solid, low-cost knife of which many Chinese manufacturers have already been proven capable.

I wouldn't worry to much about getting a fake Rat 1, I think the only one are those on E-bay that I linked to.

A RAT 1 in 8cr13mov would not be so bad if all else was equal.
