Core/surge plier markings
on: July 27, 2008, 04:16:57 PM
On my Core there is a little difference in the Leatherman name on the two sides of the pliers . Its easier to explain with a photo

its only on one side , looks like its part of the casting and has been ground down flush with the resr of the letters. As I understand it the Core shares the same plier head as the Surge so it may be on them too . Its not on J-Sews Core but is on Mickyd's . Anyone know why ? Is it just a tiny fault in the casting mould or is there a more sinister reason  >:D My Core dates are 0905 so it may only be on early models   ???

I'll let this thread run a little while and then email Leatherman .Lets see if they are as good at answering my picky questions as well as Vic do  ;)

The understanding I got is that they get the castings from somewhere, and they are ground down to the final product here, but that part of the tool is done by means of lasers. Maybe its meant to be there? I don't know, but interesting question too ask them.

Maybe its to do with only being sold in certain countries . I know that some boxes say only for sale in the USA so maybe its a way for warrenty departments in certain countries to tell if its a grey import or not  ??? Seems alot of trouble though

That could be true. I would ask. Either way you really look at it, a Leatherman is a Leatherman:) I just hope that Leatherman sticks with their senses and doesn't start dealing with China. If they do, I hate to say it, but I will be gone from Leatherman. Part of the reason I don't buy Gerber's anymore or Buck knives or tools.

Guys, check your Surges too, as they use the same plier head casting as the Core.

Hi,

I checked three Surges and two Cores - no funny dot.

As the LEATHERMAN name is investment cast in the plier head, I'd think a errant bit of the wax used to make the ceramic mold is probably the culprit.

My Surge is a "grey import", my Core is British Army issue - no dot on either!

Joe's theory is believable, but it looks a bit too perfect to be an accident? I don't know

I used to come here a lot.

Does anybody else kind of wish Dunc hadn't told us that? All the speculation was a lot more interesting than reality.  :-\

No dots on any of mine. but I feel it is there for a reason. Look how perfectly round it is. Maybe it is a support for the letter L so it dont melt out during forging.or actually get ground away.
