First look at the LM Super Tool 300
on: April 09, 2015, 05:10:38 PM
Hello Ladies and Gentlemen!

My name is Andi and I´m a knife/MT-addict... But who isn´t?!
Well, I recieved my first ST300 in the mail today. I have to say, I´m blown away by its versatility and its weight and its tank-like-construction. First of all; I´m almost the owner of several MTs and about 80 SAKs, so I have a little experience in this kind of things. Including a lot of LMs (Wave, Rebar, Blast, Wingman etc etc etc)

But this one is really great. I can´t stop play with it, even right now it is lying next to me. I love the feel of it. It feels like a real tool, not like many others that are flimsy and somehow stopped growing to a big man. When I got it, I walked down to my workshop and did some testing on it; used the pliers and disassembled some of kitchen machinery my wife told me I should repair. Now they are ready for recycling. Especially her handmixer is gone now.

LM made a big hit with this one, I think. It came in a nice leather pouch, which I like but I ordered a nylon sheath for slimmer appearance (if possible).
The tools on the ST300 are great to work with - heavy and durable. I was using the pliers of my Rebar at work for some times and I always had the feel I would bend the whole construction, even when doing regular type of work on them. The ST300 pliers are such a great tool. All the other tools make 'em feel like real tools. Look at the drivers, the file and the saw! This could be things that jumped out of a tool box and now living on an MT.

But there is also a little (!!) shade - really just a little. The PE blade doesn´t disengage well. I have to lift the blade a little and then disengage the lock. Sticky lock. Oh and the PE & SE blades were not sharp enough. They had a working edge, but I added a razor edge - as I prefer them.

Family shot

All-in-all I can say I have been so positively surprised by an MT. It is a heavy brute and might be a little late to its party, but it makes a great tool and I gonna carry it on my belt now. But on my daypack I will carry my Rebar nontheless at it has been there for almost half a year now and served me well. Not for the real hard and heavy work.

Thanks for reading!

Nice write up.  I carried the Surge and love it for all the reasons you state for the ST300.  I finally got the ST300 and was equally impressed with it, again for all the reasons you state.  It will be great for you to follow up with this thread to see how time and more usage with this big boy treats you  :tu: :tu:

Nice review Andi. It sounds as though your ST is a user, but if you are a fan of the tool and want something a little special, have you seen the 30th Anniversary version of that tool? There is a recent thread on here with a very nice picture.

Thanks for the kind replies, fellows. Much appreciated!

I carried that MT with me all day - without using it. Just had to put it out from time to time to fondle that bunch of steel. It is a little bulky on the belt, but weightwise it is ok for me. It doesn´t take out my pants immediately. I´m looking forward recieving the nylon sheath. I´m still totally amazed by this tool.

Thanks Leatherman!

Well, I got me a Nylon Sheath recently. Now I have my setup ready and I plan to carry it every day at work; at least until autumn; so during summer. I put up some items like a Kraftmaxx flashlight (similar to the Fenix E01) but with several modes and options. Like it much. I carried it until now clipped on one of my pockets.
And a Fisher Space Pen that didn´t get used much; it was just disappearing in every pocket I put it  in.

I realised that the leather sheath for the LM 300 is rather well made. But it seems that the nylon sheath is a better carry option (for me). It is a little slimmer to carry and is well made as well.

Thanks for watching!

I find the leather sheath to be tight fitting on the tool, so I'm a little surprised that you say the nylon one is slimmer. I would have guessed it would have been bulkier. Glad to hear it works better for you though :tu:

Well, the sheath question is propably somekind of dogma ;)

I´ve tried the nylon one and the leather dress. To me, the nylon sheath works better as it fits better (tighter?) to the tool. It works really well for me. On my medium sized LMs I actually prefer the leather sheaths. Wave/Rebar fit way better in their leather sheaths.

Well... some update!

I carried the tool until right yesterday - every single day. And used it a lot. I has almost its dings and such. But that is what it is. A tool. None of the tools got loose - even the screwdrivers, that got used hard don´t show any play. Everything is still tight and well put together. But the 154CM hard wire cutters are just great. They work really fine. Just needed to put a new edge on the cutters with a small file. Now it cuts paper again just fine.

I just wanted to tell you that I will put the tool on my daypack and will swap it out for a Victorinox Spartan to carry daily

As I almost mentioned ... just an update.

Great view from ST300. I like leather case it game with. Compact and stong leather smell :) I see this tool (with the case) as real leatherman.
