It's not a .357 Magnum. It's a .357 Ma.........

Early on it was known as a .357 Super Magnum, but it has a more common and more official name today.

Close enough.  .357 (Remington) Maximum
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.357_Remington_Maximum

It approaches the muzzle energy of a 7.62x39mm, .44 Magnum and a .30-30 and is great low recoil deer round.

Rem Max, haven't seen one of those in years. One of those cartridges that could have been more popular if better marketed- stick it in a lever action carbine, and you'd have had a serious brush gun that could have also handled light loaded .38s for bunny thumping.

Well, darn. Other people remembered it to.

It would be OK.  Especially for long range.  I wouldn't want to lug it through the woods though.

Just make a kydex sheath for it, who needs a necker when you can hang an m1 around your neck instead!

My firearms with wood have become safe queens.  I'm paranoid about taking them to the woods or even to the range.  My .357 Maximum is a 16" barrel TC Encore with synthetic stock.  I think it weighs less than 6 lbs.

Again, no peeking.  :dwts:  This round is relatively new.  Yet, it has been around for about 20 years.  Do you know what it's called and its original wildcat name?

It is comparable to the performance of the 7.62x39mm shown on the right, but it is much more versatile.  I can be loaded with a bullet as light as a 110gr or as heavy as a 220gr bullet.  Some people load it even heavier.

Not any lever actions that I'm aware of.  Lever actions typically shoot blunt nose, rimmed cartridges, although there are exceptions.

Back in the 90's this cartridge was popular in single shot TC Contenders.  Today it has been revamped (same basic specs) for use in semi-auto rifles (as well as bolt action and single shots).  It is popular as a sub-sonic, hard thumping cartridge.

shark_za knows what it is.

Yes, the .300 Whisper, known today as the 300 BLK (300 Blackout).

Reason I asked about the gallery rifles is we'd terminated the membership of some guys at my club for using 300 Whispers in gallery rifle comps(25yrd turning target I'm guessing).

Problem is,our ranges are only rated by the MoD for .357 mag/.44 Special/.455 SAA

I've got another quiz for you.  Last one today.  (I can't think of any more right now.) I'm not posting any pictures because it would probably give it away.

At the end of the black powder era, at the end of the 19th Century, many cartridges were converted from black powder to smokeless powder.  This cartridge is known as the first sporting cartridge designed for smokeless powder.  It is a rifle cartridge.

What is it?
