Good point.Does your figure for USA include Alaska? (or Hawaii?)
The following two primary sources (non-mirrored) represent the range (min./max.) of total area for China and the United States. Both sources exclude Taiwan from the area of China. The Encyclopædia Britannica lists China as world's third-largest country (after Russia and Canada) with a total area of 9,572,900 sq km,[4] and the U.S. as fourth-largest at 9,526,468 sq km. The figure for the U.S. is less than in the CIA Factbook because it excludes Coastal and Territorial waters.[5]The CIA World Factbook lists the United States as the third-largest country (after Russia and Canada) with total area of 9,826,675 sq km,[6] and China as fourth-largest at 9,596,961 sq km.[7] This figure for the U.S. is greater than in the Encyclopædia Britannica because it includes Coastal and Territorial waters.

I hate to be the fly in the ointment here, but has the projection been compensated for? From the map projection you have used, Norway is very large compared to the rest og europe, wich means that australia also is unnaturaly large as its so far south, if the same projection is used. Edit: Looking at the numbers the projection is probably wrong: USA is 9,8 million km2 Europe is 10 million km2 Australia is: 7,6 million km2 Australia is still smurfing huge, just not that huge Sent from a device made from star dust using tapatalk
here's the google earth view of Australia. Basically, you can live in about HALF of the green bit. In the brown bit, unless you are tough as a boot, if the land don't kill you, the critters will.
I guess one thing to remember is that compared to CONUS a large percentage of our landmass is desert.
Lots of beach front properties! It amazes me to consider the population density of AU.
...And something like 90% (probably more) live within 100k of the sea.
Haha...Straya must be overcrowded though - I mean look at all those boat people they turn away and send to Nauru.
