The old hickory kephart blade

Making an old hickory butcher knife into a kephart style blade. Start by patterning out your blade shape.
Next cut, do so slowly and make sure you don't overheat. I used some vegetable oil to drop the temp and took it slow.
Once everything is rough cut you will begin to shape...
Working the choil area...
Then on to final work and sharpening...
Overall this was a fun project. It kept me busy when I first hurt my back. Though it doesn't seem to be a lot to some people, it was a big confidence booster to me. I have never been super mechanically inclined, but with a little patience, this can be done. Try it if you like and don't be intimidated. I used the old hick as if I screwed up, I was out about $10. The experience was well worth it.

Thank you everyone. Not sure what the next project will be. I may give a try at modding an SAK when some money frees up.

I rather liked the initial shape but maybe it was a little too big for its intended purpose.
Nicely done!

Nice work. I wonder if there will be any issues in the performance because of possible HT tampering

Excellent! This is how it was done in the old days- buy a butcher knife or a skinner and then shape it to fit your idea of what the right knife should be.
Next step, use it. See if you've killed the temper. If you have, wall hanger. If you haven't- sheath making time. Any thoughts on that?
