Leatherman 300 multitool lost
on: May 11, 2015, 08:01:49 PM
So I dropped more than a little money on a 300 to replace the original Leatherman multi tool I was given a while back.

I bought this one because I use it every day and I rely on it:

It came with a halfway decent little nylon threaded pouch with a fairly sturdy velcro latching system.

The first month I used it it was great. After four weeks I began to notice the velcro system was beginning to lose it's holding power. After three months it was barely holding on at all. At this point I began to try ad keep it in my pocket, but when I am underneath of a car with my legs up it can fall right out of the pocket.

Eventually it slipped out so many times I just kept it on my nightstand. I thought I left it somewhere nearby in my house a few months ago but now it's nowhere to be found.

I am so very disappointed with the cheapness of the pouch it comes with. Failure after three months... To protect a tool that costs near $100, that is designed to be used every day? Their "Strongest" tool?

It means nothing to have a good tool if the device that keeps it close to me fails.

I hear you and wonder why one of my Waves came with one as well, it's Leatherman after all.
At least a leather case was cheap to replace it, a dollar more then the ballistic.

I've never liked velcro sheaths, I like the old school leather sheaths. I still have the PST that I got in the early 90's and the sheath is still in great shape even although I carried everyday for work for almost 20 years. I wish Leatherman would start getting good leather sheaths like they used to. The new ones are not nearly as well made.

There are some really nice after market custom leather sheaths available.

I had no idea these were available. It is sad we need them... And thank you! I have a feeling it will turn up, hoping anyway.

The problem with this sheath and most leather is no horizontal carry.  The nylon surge holster allows horizontal carry.  The bigger the tool the more comfortable horizontal is.
PM me if you want one of my kidneys for your SOG TiNi multitool.

OK, both my kidneys.

I'm sure he would make one if requested, it is a custom leather shop after all.

You can get some very nice leather sheaths on the bay for less than $10.  I'm not sure I understand why you didn't do something about the sheath when it was clear it was failing....?
I'm not a fan of Velcro sheaths at all, but I didn't think they were that crappy.  Yikes

I bought some velcro I though I might be able to sew on it, and was in the process of working it out in my mind when it would no longer safely carry the tool. That's when I transitioned to pocket carry, and eventually lost the tool. I didn't even think to look online for a leather case.

You know what though? I still have the nylon sheath from my original Wave, all those years ago and it still works. Just a tiny little patch of velcro on the ballistic nylon and it works better that the new ones, and that is after thousands of uses. The new wave sits in it a little too tight and is hard to remove so I just use it to store other tools now.
Eventually even McGyver got himself a Leatherman

Though this Indian head holster is made for a Buck 110 it fits my SOG West Marine Performance Sailing Tool which is pretty big.  There is room to spare so it might fit a LM300.  I've been carrying my SOG in a nylon LM Surge sheath horizontally.

I'm going to make cuts in the back for horizontal carry in my Indian head holster.

Another option for a Leather horizontal carry sheath that should fit a ST300 is the Schrade tough tool sheath. These are built solid.

That really bites to lose a nice tool because of a crappy sheath.  I'm not a fan of inside tools, but the ST300 is a darn nice tool and it's a shame Leatherman doesn't ship them all with a decent leather sheath.  The Wave and the ST are their iconic offerings....
