Pocket clip and scissors on a Rebar
on: May 15, 2015, 10:04:31 PM

I built this a few months ago and though it was a good tool, wasn't totally happy with the finish or tool layout.  Got the chance to tidy it up this afternoon so I thought I'd document the changes I made.

I don't like sheaths, so added a Wingman clip to hold it in my pocket.  Initially I used a Wingman pliers pivot (3/16" dia.) and shimmed it to fit the 5/32" hole in the Rebar pliers:

This was ok but there was some play in the pivot so I turned a replacement part from 1/4" brass hex bar.  No pics of the manufacture, but here it is fitted:

The washer under the hex section is to lift the clip so it sits on the surface of the Rebar handles nicely.
The hole on the handle is to locate the anti-rotation tab on the wingman clip.  It's not very tidy because I tried to drill it to begin with, then mucked about with diamond burrs on my Dremel, and slipped. :-[  Should have got a milling cutter in the first place.

I left the pivot too long and filed it after fitting so that the screw bottomed out on the brass bush, instead of needing to tighten the screw to adjust the action of the pliers:

Here's the clip fitted over the hex end of the pivot.  I filed the hex part down until the clip was held tightly by the screw - the pivot is hollow, with an M4 thread tapped all the way through so I can use proper fasteners, not some imperial rubbish. ;)

I used metric hex socket button head screws:

Pretty happy with it now - clean lines, good toolset, handy pocket clip and it's unique.  It's the multitool I carry most often when I'm out on my bike - the cutters are the best I've got for both hard solid and braided stainless wire.  And to prove it does get used occasionally:

I'm not too sure how I like those Wave scissors after some recent stuff I read on here about them. I wonder if there's any way to get Victorinox scissors in a Rebar

Yeah, they're definitely not as good as the 91mm Vic scissors.  Better than nothing, and a little easier to use than those on a Classic.  Vic scissors will fit (Pingu has fitted some) but you're relying on friction to hold them in the handles when shut.  Not ideal.

Compared to adding the clip, putting Wave scissors in there was a piece of piss. :D

Undo the pivots, muck about with the tools until everything you want fits, screw it all back together.

I did grind a bit off the thumb pad for the scissors so it fitted nicely into the handles, a little off the end of the small flat driver so it cleared the scissors when folded, and bit off the sides of the larger flat driver so it didn't stop the handles closing fully when shut.

In theory "yes".  I've previously posted that mod though it was an early mod and I didn't have the skill or imagination to stop the scissors "auto-deploying" from the spring compression resulting in the risk of jab injury.   Be good to know how others solve that.

I've had Wave scissors in my Rebar though not currently and I was happy with them.

Unfortunately, the PST II has become so hard to obtain or that would be the ideal scissor tool IMO.

Nice work!  I'd love to fit Vic scissors on a rebar, but not sure how much hacking would be needed for that type of mod.

 :hatsoff: thanks chaps.

They go in just fine - opening out the pivot hole is easy - but they swing open too far and won't lock into position. I think the tang isn't big enough to cut the features you'd need for the locking mechanism and still keep the pivot in s sensible place.

Also the scissors leaf spring tries to push them out of the handles when they're closed - with the Wave scissors the spring mechanism disengages so they don't pop open.
