Why Wave?

SAKs (& probably the original PST) notwithstanding - the Leatherman Wave is arguably the best selling multitool (Leatherman seem to think so, referring to it as "Most Popular"). Why is this so?

Is it the marketing behind it? tool selection? size? price?
combination of all of the above?

What makes this tool more popular than most alternatives on the market?

I think you just scratched the surface on it. Yah the price is nice, and the tool selection is great. but look also at the size of it. Not really much bigger than a sak.Plus it has a really great name behind it. Not the marketing, but the linage. It came at a time that the pst was being really phased out, and it just was introd at the right time, and it just made it big.

Some tool companies might be of better quality but the wave just hit all the marks at the right time and place.

E- All of the above!! :think:
"Some rise by sin, and some by virtue fall;
 Some run from breaks of ice, and answer none:
 And some condemned for a fault alone." -William Shakespeare, King Lear (1608), Act IV, scene 6, line 169

In my particular area, the Supertool and PST-size tools far outnumber the Wave. When I have seen Wave carriers and we have spoken (I live a sad life, indeed :D), the Wave has been chosen primarily on two fronts: 1) It's a Leatherman brand and 2) The one-hand opening knife blades.

The Gerber users far outnumber Leatherman users in my area, but outside of myself, I have never seen anyone carrying a Legend that I could tell. It's mostly the MPs and the like. For some reason, perhaps the bigger bulk, the Legend's one-hand blade doesn't seem a factor for local purchasers. Gerber users tend to gravitate there for the pliers.

For my own choosing, I've carried the Wave since it was introduced primarily for the one-hand blade and smaller, less obtrusive size. It's not perfect by a long shot, but I think it makes an excellent general-use urban multitool.

The original Wave as said before came out @ the right time and a whole lot of ppl bought it, timing is everything :D Plus it's a very good tool the new Wave has improvement over the old 1 and more and more LM fans keep buying them ::)  ;) :D I love mine and carry it a lot, it has a wide tool selection and has a broader range becasue of the addons like the bit kit and removable clip etc. all around good compact tool :D

I think it's so popular because it was the first easily carried multi-tool that could replace a pocket knife with no functional loss or clunky opening routine.

It's a quality tool of moderate size, by a company people respect and trust, and was the first (and still cheapest) MT that gave all the benefits of a OH knife. Seems like a winner to me. :)

This is true, plus the new one makes it where you can use a pocket clip and carry it like a knife plus more tools.
