The regular crowd.
on: May 14, 2015, 08:52:56 PM
Being a life long knife nut has it's drawbacks. One of them is you never settle down with use one single knife like our fathers and grandfathers did. Somehow, my dad, made it through his life carrying a little Case peanut. He was one of those old time semi mythical guys who had a pocket knife, so he couldn't see why he would have an other one. Mabye living though the great depression has something to do with his thinking process. He had kind of an almost puritanical practical way of thinking about things. Now as an old fart, I seem to have inherited some of that thinking. But I still carry a number of knives in rotation.

Being a retired gentleman of leisure in the suburbs of a large eastern USA city, I really don't have much use for a very large knife. Being retired means I now have time to do all those things I dreamed of doing while I was stuck indoors on the job. Fishing, hiking, canoeing, road trips to the beach or mountains. I find I have actually more need of a knife now than when I was working, but a small one will suffice. The small knife leaves room in the pocket for other things I end useful, like a small bottle of hand santizer, spare bandana, aluminum Bison capsule with arthritis meds and some aspirin in case of impending vapor lock, RONCO pocket defibrillator in case of actual vapor lock.

For some years I carried a little Case peanut, and it did very well. I only gave it away when arthritis in my fingers made it hard for me to open the knife. Now I am carrying an old Camillus made Remington UMC peanut that a good friend found at a knife show. It has nice easy blade pulls that even an arthritic old fart can deal with, and it has great old 1095 carbon blades.

I have a handmade Sardinian Resolza with rams horn handle and 12C27 blade made by a Senior Salvatore Usai of Sardinia. This knife gets carried a lot as it's a friction folder and flat-out beautiful to boot. Nice and easy to open, the flat ground blade slices like an Opinel without the swelling issue of the handle gets wet. But most of all, I love the feel of the knife. It feels suave. Like I should be sitting in an outdoor cafe someplace Mediterranean, with a loaf of fresh Italian bread and some cheese, sipping on expresso or a nice wine. If the most interesting man in the world carries a pocket knife, it must be a Resolza.

ONce in a while I'll carry an old Chisty knife. Just for yuks you knmopw. My dad loved these things, and once bought 50 of them to issue out to his people where he worked in the Government machine in Washington D.C. The last ten years of his life he carried one because his arthritis made opening a small slip joint like his peanut difficult.

But for sheer utility, I can't find anything that beats the small multitools. Need a knife blade to open a package? Got it. Need a bottle opener? Got it. Screw driver? Yeah, we got it. Even scissors to trim a broken nail or small pliers to grip something old fingers can't manage anymore.

I guess that covers my usual crowd. The knives I really carry and use a lot. What do you use the most?

Don't get too serious, just enough will do.

My pocket knives  are too varied to list, but recently I've stuck to small traditional patterns (like the peanut I've got in my pocket right now) or a SAK of some kind.  Normally 85mm or 91mm.
Be excellent to each other and always know where your towel is.

I use whatever is most suited for the job, or whatever my mood dictates. I have that many tools and knives which get carried and used, I'll not be taking any pics. The last time I took a pic of my users for this forum, I had to stand of a chair

Most used traditional slippies:
Nieto Manolina, Buffalo scaled A Wright senator, stag handled Muela, TL-29, Sodbuster Jr

Most used clipped OHO slippies:
Byrd Tern, Byrd Wings Slipit, CRKT Mah Liong #5

Most used SAKs:
Manager, Original Outdoorsman, Traveller (one of the many ), Yeoman, Ranger 14,

Most used pliers tools (with knives - we are in edged tools forum):
Diesel, Balance, Sideclip, MP700, PST, Dime

This can all change at the drop of ahat though. Suddely I'll get the urge to carry something different, and end upusing that for a week or three  ;)
