Something A Little Riveting
on: August 02, 2008, 09:00:45 AM
Look what I tracked down on U.S. Ebay  :D.                                                                                                                  http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll287/multimat426/multitools/2f2024d4.jpg[/img]]                               Initially the seller was only selling to U.S buyers but I asked & got lucky    :D :D :D :D                                            http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll287/multimat426/multitools/40ae841b.jpg[/img]]                          It has been a huge challenge as 99% of sellers do not know what they are selling  & the photos only give a snippet of what is needed to be sure it is a riveted PST. I also found Ebay search process is some what floored , in that if you put in Leatherman PST or pocket survival tool you miss a lot of PST's =  many hours of going through Ebay U.S  entire Leatherman listings 20-30 pages  :o :o ::). In the end I am over the moon tool is neglected but not trashed the smallest screw driver end has been twisted a little , the Phillips head is quite worn & one side of the plier pivot is a bit tight . All   in all I am happy & I could not have done it with out Bob's excellent photos & articles about riveted PST's .              http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll287/multimat426/multitools/02d67357.jpg[/img]]                                  Definitely not the deal sealer , possibly the crapiest sheath I have ever seen .The plastic not so fantastic :D

Nice!

The riveted PST has really seen a tipping point since the PST Chronology project got started; cool.

Congrats on the rare score you got there Mat! Heck you might have the only riveted PST in the southern hemisphere for all we know. :D

More observations:
Check out the hollow based rivets. Some early PST's are like that, while others have a solid base on the rivet so they look pretty much the same top and bottom.

Also cool is the little series of stake marks around the plier pivot (another characteristic of the early models)

Bob :)

I think I first found out about them when I read you had one & thought 'I wonder what the heck that is'which lead to me finding Bob's ace work on the topic. The photos of yours caused me much envy  :D now poor old Davek can be envious of both ours  >:D.

I reckon most of the riveted PST would have been sold originally in the states . So it has been a bit of a obsession of mine trying to acquire one I hate to think the  hours spent squinting at shi#house ebay photos.

I have one also, but it is in bad shape.
A piece of the handle where the knife comes to a stop is gone, the blade itself is messed up, and several small ites are twisted.
And ofcourse because of the riveted nature i cannot repair it.

Would this still be of any value ?

Now that's a fine question. I think these tools are a classic case of being worth whatever people will pay for them. I would certainly pay more for a riveted model (even with a bit of damage) than I would pay for a bog standard PST, but whether there is a 'market value' I seriously doubt. I've seen riveted models go for $20 on ebay.com, and then the next day for over $100. The value seems to have gone up since Bob started his PST project though :D
I used to come here a lot.

Like anything else old or odd, I am always interested in getting one, but it's not a priority.  However, if you knew of one going for a good deal...  :pok:

It's 2 late about the optometrist I have been wearing glasses and contacts for most of my life.  But you have to have a keen eye for most of those Ebay pics :( Infact I just lucked up on an early PST II the ones that look exactly like the PST but have the PST II tool set ::) The pics were horrible but I could just make out the writing and barely saw that it had scissors (they were listed on the list of tools though) ;) So now I am on the hunt for a riveted PST :D

Pacu a sideclip is heaps easier to find , there are a couple of US ebay sellers selling the Bass Pro Shops Sideclip NIB for $40-$60us. They only sell to US buyers though >:( . I paid $70us for my one . I only found one seller willing to post to OZ http://search.ebay.com.au/_W0QQsassZ2_4keno . I bought a Pulse & a Sideclip both new from this chap , I paid more than US buyers can get these MT's for , but cheaper than what 2nd hand ones go for outside of the USA. :o
