Celidor appreciation thread
on: June 22, 2015, 03:48:39 AM
With all the alox love on this forum, you would think that was the only kind of SAK. Well, some of us prefer the classic look of plastic scales. Some of us consider the toothpick to be one of the most essential tools a SAK has. And those backside tools are too good to give up. Think of the hooks!  Here's to celidor scaled SAKs!

Good thread :tu:  I'm always torn between cellidor and alox.  Right now I'm on more of an alox kick, but I tend to go back and forth over time.  Here's my Rogueneer to contribute :)

Those extra tools(pen, pin, toothpick and tweezers) are the kicker.

I took a bee out of a ropes course instructors ear once with tweezers.  You cant to that with a farmer

Have to love celidor.
The great selection of models to choose from to get the right tool selection for any given day.

Today I have the Midnite Manager and when on the road, the small pen is excellent to take notes on the run and the small LED to find stuff under the seat or door compartments (Like the pen you couldn´t find to take the note in the first example)
The magnifying glass of the explorer is excellent to take close up photos withe the phone camera.

I like the alox as well but as users they are sometimes a little limited, but I do love the slimness and ease of cleaning my Cadet. You need both.

Nice one GoatDragon!

SAK Guy - You know you have a problem when you measure your collection by weight!  :salute:

If I had to choose between Alox and Cellidor, I would take Cellidor every time. Aside from the back tools and the T & T, I just prefer the look and feel of it.

As much as I like my Alox and Spirit, the metal makes them look a bit 'cold' and unfriendly.

Here's my lovely Cellidor;

I like alox but like you said, the little differences make it hard to choose. I like the Cadet but the Sportsman gets the same or more use. It's the same as a Cadet + T&T + CS + Small SD + Pin + Reamer/Puncher.

I have SAKs with alox scales, wood scales, buffalo horn, stainless scales, stainless steel and leather (Deluxe Cigar Cutter), but celidor is King! Not only does it have the back tools and scale tools, but it's also the universally accepted utility knife with the red scales.

I've always carried a Cellidor... in fact I never even considered added an Alox to my collection until relatively recently (like a 4 years ago-ish).

Part of that reason is because my first intro to SAK was always cellidor.  I had an uncle who I didn't see a ton of growing up, and when I did see him he's often show up his latest SAK, which was always cellidor.  So for the longest of time SAKs were always Cellidor for me.

Another reason I prefer Cellidor: More tools.  I'd hate to give up the pin, pen, pick, and tweezers.  I don't use them that much, but I'm always thankful that I have 'em when I do need to use them.

So I definitely tend to be a cellidor guy and the majority of my collection is cellidor.   But about 4-ish years ago I got some of the cadets colors and was blown away by their looks.  Just really cool look and feel to them.  Since then I've added a number of 58s and some 93s in Alox to my collection.  Still carry the cellidor though.

I like 'em both.  The smooth, warm, well worn driftwood feel of cellidor and the rugged, practical toughness of alox.  I like how easy it is to freshen up a cellidor knife (with new scales or a bit of polish and some elbow grease) and I like the weathered look of a well-used Pioneer. I like the added tools of the cellidor knives and I like the clean lines of the alox.

Love Celidor, for the side and back tools!

Just wondering though, couldn't Victorinox build an alox with back tools? Or is there some technical reason why it can't?

I cant work out why but I have recently fallen in love with the Tourist. Although I carry other things daily it always comes with.

There is something attractive about the 84mm knives for me.

Interestingly enough it has been more than capable at handling everything I have needed a sak for in the past week or so. I imagine that it is able to handle most things that most people carry a sak for.

Its a very attractive size. I imagine that Vic pulled away from this series in the past because of the Wenger 85mm knives. Whatever the reason for the reduction in 84mm models its a great loss.
