Lowtech - Where has he been?
on: July 06, 2015, 06:17:04 PM
Hey folks!

Apart from a few sparse PMs I dropped out of here pretty suddenly.
First, my wife started to work again in May after her parenting time was over when our son had his first birthday.
This is when I took over and went into my 8 week parenting time. This cut back on my free/shop/MTO time, but was and is a really good experience. Although a toddler of his age is quite hard to handle, we have had much fun together and I am glad I took the opportunity to be the parent in charge. ;-)

Quite a bit more restrictive and much less fun was and is a medical issue I am struggling with.
It all started with my feet and thumb joints that hurt a bit when I did usual chores. In around 10 days the first only mediocre pain became that bad that I sometimes could not get out of or back into bed without breaking into tears. All my joints and tendons except for my shoulder/back/head did hurt when moved. Not just a bit, but bad. Like cursing and whishing to drop dead here and now bad.

This made caring for my son quite complicated and I set my priorities on family, as I did not have any power left after just a routine day.

I started with self medication but saw a doctor later on. After first adjusting the pain meds, then changing them to some opiate based ones and still not getting anywhere, I am now on a combined therapy of pain killers and cortisone to keep the joints at around their usual size and to fight the pain. I still cannot do any hard work, but I feel better - I can even type again!

My Doc is assuming its a kind of rheumatism, but I have to wait to se a speSmurfpillsed medic and I must say I´m not too keen on having rheumatism.

Well, to end my ramblings and to make a long story short - I apologize to those who have had and still do wait on their packages and I do thank all of those thinking about me. I´ll send out PMs with your shipping Info.

It´s good to be back!

Thanks! I am sorry I left so many loose ends. But sometimes life just hits you in the face. I hope I´ll get everything sorted out and I am positive I´ll get a grip on whatever medical condition / disease it is.

The Doctor is not sure if it is and what kind of Rheumatoid Arthritis it might be.
I think I ignored hurting joints for quite some time now as I always thought they did hurt from overstressing them a bit. I sometimes have had hurting knees or thumbs or hands, but not that massive and never more than one pair of joints/limbs at a time. The good thing is that there were no permanent damages visible on the X-Rays yet.

DKS: The bad news is that I still did not find the spare links of the bracelet... but I think I have another watch with fitting links. We´ll fix you up with a nice watch...

Glad to see you back buddy, but sorry to hear about the pain you're going through. :(  Hopefully the docs will be able to come up with something that will work well, and help you to feel more normal.

Thomas, sorry to hear of your problems.  :(  I hope your doctor can work out what it is and what treatment will help you  :tu:  (and if they can't, then a second opinion from another unrelated doctor can sometimes be a big help).

I already feel better from being surrounded by the usual nuts... Thanks.  :tu:
At the moment I don´t have much pain unless I try to work in the shop as I used to... So I keep my manners and will patiently wait what this (and maybe another) Doctor has to say.

Good you went to see the Doc.  As we get older we assume the aches and pains are age related or past renegade behavior related.  I sure hope you continue on the path to feeling better.

Seriously, that sounds really unpleasant man.  Good luck with everything.  I hope it turns out to be some easily treatable exotic flu bug or something they can deal with.

Well all the best to you, focus on the family.

My mother suffers from Rheumatoid Arthritis, and for a long time. Now, I don't know if that applies for all types of arthritis but being careful with acidic food (bread / meat / coffee) and reducing salt in your food might go a long way...
It wouldn't be the internet without people complaining.

Hey Thomas
Great to hear from you my friend.
I don't suffer from rheumatism or arthritis but my father does and to see him whince whilst trying to do the simplest chores made me realise how we all take our health for granted.

Hope the doc's can bring it under control.
Better still, hope it just goes away.

The hardest part was the mental part - I am a person who usually looks for a solution when confronted with a task or problem. Standing there helpless with the easiest of chores nearly drove me insane. I love my wife even more for putting up with me in the last weeks - I was not in the best of moods.

We are talking about things like carrying my son over to change a diaper or open a bottle of soda with a twist cap - I really took health for granted.

Thomas, I really feel for you on this. I suffer with intermittent joint pain in my hands, and when it strikes I know how debilitating, disheartening, and humiliating it feels.

My step-nephew is just approaching his teens, and he has been hit hard by juvenile arthritis. At times he has been unable to turn a door handle, dress himself, or undo his trousers to go to the loo. I've seen what it does to a kid's mind, and I can only imagine what it does to you as a father. Stay strong, and the answers will come in time. The young lad has been through some intensive meds, and has a long term plan in front of him. He's had to walk away from some of the things he loved like martial arts and football, but he's adapting. In time it will be managed and he'll have a full (albeit different) and happy life. You still have the hope that this is something acute rather than chronic, and you have people working on this for you to find the solution, and you have a loving wife who sounds like a real keeper.

Chin up mate, we're all routing for you, and I hope the answers and the solutions come very soon

Sorry to hear this, Thomas.  Joint pain is something I can identify with for sure.  There are days I just want to saw my left leg off just above the knee. :(  I've got some arthritis in my right hand as well, which already isn't in the best of shape after having been smashed and broken on three separate occasions.  Fortunately I'm one of those weirdo lefties..... ;)  Hopefully your docs can find something that works well for you. :tu:

Sorry to hear of your health problems Thomas. I have a very few slight niggles with joint pain and that is bad enough.
Hope you have success in treatment and recovery or at least management soon.

I will find a way to live with this and am still hoping it´s acute.
