Wow, the first knife I bought?

My first knives were a Boy Scout Ulster slip joint and a Buck Woodsman, but these were gifts when I was 10 and 12.  I still have the BSA Ulster, but the Woodsman was stolen out of my luggage 15 yrs ago.

My first purchase was a Vic Champion in the summer of '73. It lasted just over two years and was lost on a forest fire in Eagle, CO in the fall of '75.  I wore it on my belt in a Zermatt leather pouch.  Back then the belt attachment on Zermatts came up and over in a looping fashion and were fastened with a rivet.  It was actually very easy for something to get caught between the pouch and your belt, popping the rivet.  If you were active and moving fast, you'd never know it left your belt.  So mother nature and karma took that knife and pouch away.  I was really upset during our next break when I realized I couldn't open the bottle of Coke somebody brought us at the pickup zone.  And I really couldn't afford to lose/replace it.

After going to school and working that winter, I went to the local surplus store and bought another Champion and Zermatt leather pouch.  After purchasing, I headed to my folks, and my dad's leather shop.   There I cut off the rivets, shortened the belt loop, and reattached it my way.  I still have and use that knife/pouch combination today.  Funny, but the new Zermatt pouch I recently purchased for my Yeoman is configured similar my adjustment from '76.

That's my story...I'm sticking to it and have a few pictures for your viewing pleasure...

My first buy was actually a Northland framelock folder.

The purchase was simply like for many the hollow handle Rambo knife was - a cool thing. It didn't see much use due to weight and slickness of the handle, although it was a pretty decent woods bumming knife. Now if it would have stayed in the pocket instead of falling out maybe it would still be in my collection today.

Sadly this is the only picture of it that I have

First knife I got was a Victorinox Lumberjack, with the combo tool and the woodsaw. I remeber cutting myself often with the saw, but very seldom with the knife.
I have the feeling it is burried somewhere in the last corner of my old children's room at my parents' house.

First knife I bought for myself was a Victorinox Spartan which I joined up with a Fenix E01. One day I was looking for a light and realised I lost this combo.  >:(
Bad day for me, might have been a very lucky day for a hobo? At least that is what I tell myself.  :tu:

Later I replaced it with a Cologne Climber, so I have my home (Heimat, idk how to translate this) in my pocket. For workdays and woodwalks I will take my Harvester.  :viking:

Concerning heirlooms: I have my father's old BW fixblade (Tang Stamp FKS70, so it is 15 years older than me  :o). Someday I'm gonna regrind and polish the blade, but I doubt I will ever use it. It has a special place in my small collection and it will become more precious over time (But not so fast, I hope I will spent many more years with my father until then!).

Thank you CRKT for this GA, and thank you everyone who posts his/her story here. The memories and emotions are worth so much more than just the knife materials!  :drink:

Awesome GAW Gents!

I have racked my diminishing memory and I cannot remember the first knife I bought.  I remember the first knife I had, it was supposed to be a miniature Japanese sword letter opener.  I convinced my mother to buy it for me at Sea World in the "Japanese" area of the park.  It looked just like this:

I was able to get some basic sharpening do's and don't behind me on this knife as I was young and had no experience sharpening anything.

I also remember the first knife my father gave me, I know it was to keep me away from his stuff but I also remembering that I felt a little older after he gave it to me.  It is a:

Last but not least I clearly remember the first knife I gave to my son with a great sense of pride when he made First Class in Boy Scouts, it was a:

I did own a CRKT M-16 with tanto blade pre LAWKS for several years, until someone decided they needed it more than I did.

Congrats Trad! (is that referring to a boat or something??)

The 50 part refers to his age, when he registered, the foot is because he is stuck in the olden units, which is also shown by the traditional (believer in the old values) part.

so basically his name means a 55 (now) year old traditionalist

but I could be wrong....
