Sand.......from Hell!
on: August 08, 2008, 05:05:16 PM
How does one clean sand out of a multitool? I've heard running it through a dishwasher works. Might break out the pipe cleaners here in a bit and try that. My flea market find BearJaws seems like it traversed the Sahara. It's gritty and whomperjawed. Looks brand new though!

I use the dishwasher method, and it works but I've also heard compressed air works too.  Bear is a nice tool for cleaning because the fairly open handles give lots of access to the inner workings of the tool.  And, worst comes to worst, take it apart, clean it and put it back together again! :D

Q-tips and dental floss (unwaxed) are also handy for hard to reach areas and in between tools.

Me too , but not the stuff you get in a can . You need to try and use one thats on the end of a compressor  :D Then a good wash in soapy water and use one of those little brushes you get with an electric razor . Last of all a rinse and dry with a hair dryer .

Other than that I don't try to pass off "alot" as a word, and WD40 is not my weapon of choice, I could not agree more.

Gentlemen, all those suggestions might get the sand out, but the only way to be certain is a complete disassembly. :salute:

(fortunately the patient is a Bear)
In order to be certain of having the right tool for every job.........one must first acquire a lot of tools

Working where I do, in a Gator park in Florida, I practically LIVE covered in sand.  One of the foils of being a gator wrestler is that you end up with sand in places you didn't even know you had.  Needless to say, sand gets into my tools as well, whether it's a SAK pocketknife or multitool.  What I usually do is hold said tool under running water and work the parts.  The flowing water flushes everything out and you're good to go.  A little WD-40 in the joints and a drop of oil and it's all good.

Did the 'gator ever get your tool?

You can soon tell the guys who dont use their tools very much and when they use them in an enviroment thats a bit hostile or different they worry about their tools , on the other hand you get guys who use their tools in harsh enviroments than dont bat an eyelid about a quick wash under the tap and a squirt with WD40

No, a gator never got my tool, and yes I wear it when I wrestle.  It's on my belt, you know?  I don't take it off cause it doesn't get in the way.   And Dunc, you are right.  Some of us are old school, I guess, or practical in our usage of our tools.  Where I work, we are not only entertainers, but plumbers, carpenters,  landscapers, and electricians as well in a way.  I mean, if the grass is too high in a crocodile enclosure, no landscaping company is going to send their guy with a lawn mower to go in there and handle things.  WE have to do it.  When things break or need replacing, updating, or maintaining, we are the ones who have to do it, so my tools see constant, hard use.  Plus, we have a wet season here in Florida, and my Leatherman Wave or Swisstool is not only sandy, but also wet most of the day.  They can take alot more then most people think and keep on ticking.
