My First LED
on: August 09, 2008, 07:01:34 AM
Oh, I almost forget to mention.

I just got my first* LED Torch

*Not technically "first", but all previous LED torches have been on the $8 "9 LED Super-Brite!" variety.

Y'know, the sort with 3xAAA batteries that work for about a week before the LEDs start Colorful Enunciationting themselves?

Anyway, so I picked it up for $98 at the Sydney Boat show, it's supposed to be "splash proof", has rubber O rings, so I guess it could be true. 3 Watt LED I think? uses 2xCR123 batteries. Big ol' ally body, rubber push button on the arse. Lots of lumpy bits & knurled handled for that industrial feel.

I can't really compare it to anything, since I don't have anything else, but it blows my Mini Maglight out of the water. (At least in brightness, it does not have a very focused beam)

That's cool. Although "splash proof" doesn't seem like it would sell very well at a boat show.

What brand is it, I can't tell from pics. $98, for that price you could've had a surefire.  :o

I've never seen the brand before.

Huh, it says here "adjustable lens for beam angle"

Maybe I should try it?

Also "lifetime over 50.000 hours"

I wonder why they have decimal hours with three decimal places?

I'm hoping it stands up to use & abuse, just because it's not a big brand name shouldn't mean it's not quality.

I agree, many non-name brands are very sturdy, and your gonna find out! ;)

Recently picked up an "Xstreem" 1 Watt LED 3xAAA flashlight.

They're basically an entry level LED torch that have sprung up in just about every retail store in Sydney.
From the supermarket to electronic stores to car equipment, over the last six months almost everywhere has started stocking these things.

They're an Australian company (product made in either China or Taiwan, I forget.) and they're dirt cheap.
To the educated LED buyer, they're crummy rubbish, but to the unwashed masses, they're actually not as bad as many other bargain-quality LED torches on the market. (For example, they feature things like aluminium cases more than 1000th of an inch thick, and o-ring seals for the lens & battery caps.)

Crap website though  :P

congrats again
I find the only problem with "inexpensive" no-name tools and gadgets is if they don't last (and many don't)
and you have to buy/get another one to replace the first one (or second!) it doesn't pay.

if you had bought a good/reputable one in the first place you would have spent the same amount of money.

but if you found a good one, a no-name, reliable, it suits your needs gem, then you done right :salute:

Well, this one was free, 'cause I'm a hardened criminal.

But I know what you mean, as someone else around here likes to say - paying for quality only hurts once.
