PST 1.5 Nail Nick?
on: December 04, 2015, 01:32:45 PM
I have some PST and PSTII spare parts so made a PST 1.5 using what I think are the best parts of each tool. Scissors and diamond file from a PSTII. Awl and non serrated blade from an original PST. This does mean I had to loose the can opener. I may fit a can opener in place of the fragile small flat screw driver. Not sure which is more useful/useless. Also relocated the lanyard loop.

All is good but the awl has a nail nick on the wrong side. Does anyone have any advise on how to cut a nick on the other side? I have tried using a dremel and cutting wheel but it just skips around and makes a real mess. I only have basic hand tools (dremel, vice, files, drill etc).

Spare parts.

Closed.

Open.

Awl.

Missing nail nick.

I love that PST 1.5  :gimme: The small flat driver is useful, I think I'd prefer a can opener, though.

Couldn't you just move the awl so that the nail nick can be accessed? Perhaps you could use a Dremel drill bit to slowly score a nail nick if you really have to keep the awl in that place.

Hopefully more knowledgeable members will chime in.

I'd be tempted to pick up a diamond coated burr "ball" bit from Home Depot, etc. As much as I love the big cutoff wheel, there can be much more precision with the burr bit. Let me see if I can find a part number... Love the 1.5 by the way!

Edit- Even better, a Tungsten carbide cutter, part #9901. On my phone, can't link a photo.

Beautiful mod man! Nice work. A dremel is what I use. But I use a slower setting and use the wheel that looks like a mini high cycle wheel.

Looks great! I've been thinking of putting that toolset into a SOG PPP for a while now. I think it would make for a fantastic mod,  as SOGs inside tools are a bit lacking.

And before you cut up your awl,can you swap it with a flathead driver or other inside tool with a nail Nick on the correct side?

Nice job, it's a really nice toolset you got there! At first I was about mark the missing nail nick down to installing it on the wrong side; then I took a look at my own and realised that counter clockwise is the standard cutting direction. Victorinox uses clockwise which does seem more natural to me...

Cutting a nail nick depends on your level what you have. The proper way is to use a fly cutter at a specific angle. Dremel a work too so it's all about what you are comfortable doing.
If I remember correctly, wait, what was I saying?

Great mod ! the best of both  :tu:

I would leave the small screwdriver in and leave the can opener out. I had my first PST for 20 years and have never used the can opener.

I would also leave the awl the way it is. The way the tools clump it should be easy enough to access, in fact I don't ever use the nail nick on the awl just the tip of my finger on the point..

No offense but I don't like it. Those scissors are terrible - mine broke! :(

sawman you big meanie :twak: There is not much choice for legal carry multitools here in the UK. There are two revisions of scissors for the PSTII. The older ones had trouble cutting through card as the handle would slip off. I used the newer revision which work well enough. Maybe you had the older revision?

Thanks for the help. I have spare damaged tools to practice dremeling on so will keep trying.

SteveC you are right that a nail nick isn't really needed, but it's fun trying.

G'Day Lemo,

Very nice mod. I think the tools you chose are spot-on.

I cannot offer any nail nick advice, however, can you swap the small screwdriver and the awl around? Will that solve the problem? I know one has to be careful with the tool selection to enable the pliers to close properly. I think that the PST II with a PST blade is one of the best tools around.

Cheers,

Pete

Thanks for the suggestion Sheradin. I ordered a carbide cutter and tried it out today. It makes light work of nail nicks. I need more practice to make it look neat but the functionality is there.
