Gerber Dime parts, who wants them?
on: September 14, 2015, 11:12:42 AM
So, I had a red Dime a while ago. Took it apart because it was a lemon, the pliers were poorly machined. Then I got a black Dime, figured I'd take it apart and put some of the parts from the red Dime in it. Couldn't get it back together due to all the loctite and soft screws they use.

So now I have two completely disassembled Dimes here in my drawer. This is of no use to me. I can send these parts to anyone who needs them for free. I'll take some pics and upload these later today, as for the condition of the parts:

Scales:
Red Dime, red side: decent condition, paint is good, some wear on the corners.
Red dime, grey side: bad condition, bent or broken in two.
Black dime, all scales: worn paint, worn corners, they work but don't look good.

Tools:
Red Dime: overall, good condition, knife has been sharpened once, package opener has been sharpened once. The rest is pretty much in mint condition. Scissors have barely been used.
Black Dime: package opener and knife have both been sharpened a number of times, the rest is in good condition. Scissors have been used a little, never resharpened.

Springs, spacers and other parts of the body:
Both Dimes: everything works, minor nicks and dings in some places

Plier heads:
Red Dime: poorly machined cutting surface, damaged cutters, damaged teeth on gripping surfaces.
Black Dime: decent condition, mostly worn paint, as with most Dimes they don't cut particularly well.

Screws: Over half of the screws are stripped or damaged, a few screws and posts are still usable.

And one more. Like I said, this is junk to me. Someone else can have this. I'll get another Dime at some point because I really like the design and implements. But I won't take it apart again!

well I like to tinker with stuff, but please accept something in exchange. I have an idea of something you may like, where are you from? is shipping blades to you legal in your country?

All the stuff above is like, barely worth anything if you ask me. But that's very generous of you! And yes, you should be able to send almost anything to Sweden.

Now that I'm at a PC I see you are in Sweden, I'm in Italy, so I may send you something recalling my country (hint: it has a blade, as you may have guessed :)).

But Zoidberg was first, I feel I'm stealing the deal from him... it's your call, WiseDuck :)

Danilo

P.S.: it's also legal to send blades around in Italy, and being in Europe it's also easier, for sure.

I don't think he actually said he wanted the parts. His reply was difficult to interpret. :P
But anyways, I can get everything out to ya tomorrow if you want. I might throw something extra into the package as well. It shouldn't cost much to ship stuff to Italy in a small padded envelope.

OH and one more thing, this is important to know.. With the parts I have, you can NOT put together a complete Dime. This set is missing the back set of posts that the small screws go into, those were ruined when I took apart these two. So keep that in mind, this is good for people that already own Dimes and need to exchange parts.

It is disappointing how Gerber makes it so you can't disassemble/reassemble these tools.  At that point why not just rivet it shut, would probably look nicer.

I did enjoy the pictures though!   :salute:

Indeed. Or at least use more robust screws and low strength loctite so it isn't too easily ruined when you attempt to take it apart. While the large posts are quite easy to get out, I never could get the tiny ones out. You know, the ones fastened with T5 or T6 screws which are insanely easy to strip.

a quick update:
everything (and more!) appeared yesterday morning at my place!

Thanks WiseDuck, I'm tinkering with the parts already.
Also my 6 year old son is having some fun with the parts! ;)

and so, here they are: two single handled dimes.

It wasn't straightforward to assemble them, and I've also had to reprofile the blade and box opener for the black one.

thanks again wiseduck

So, what do you call your half-Dime? A Nickle, right? Lol

Good job, though, they look great
