The pawn shop Wave
on: October 01, 2015, 05:39:17 PM
I hit every pawn shop in our town and the next one over yesterday, looking for a vise and drill press. No luck on either.

Of course, when I'm in a pawn shop, I will, without fail, look through their knives and MTs if they have any.

Next to last pawn shop I'm at yesterday, for no reason I can figure, they had a Wave hanging on a hook in a more-or-less random location.

$39... marked down to $35.

Mmmm.... looks tempting.

I ask to take a look at it. It's in REALLY good shape. Some surface spots of rust, and something red, like paint or fingernail polish in a few spots. Bits are there and unmarred. Looks like someone did something terrible to the plain edge blade near the handle, but it looks minor and I think I can hone it out. I start opening the inside tools, and the scissors won't budge.

I'm doing all this in front of a girl working the counter. I can't get the scissors to move, and she's asking what the problem is, so I show her. While she tries to get them open, I get out my Vic Explorer, and pry them out. Small spot of rust on the scissor blade and on the handle had kind of 'welded' it closed. Once broken, it opened and closed freely.

I start going on about the damage to the main blade and the 'rusted shut' scissors, and talk her down to $30 out the door.

I get it home and spend maybe ten minutes resharpening the plain edge blade. The marring came out WAY easier than I thought it would. Then another 15-20 minutes cleaning and oiling it. For the price, it's in FANTASTIC condition.

Score!

Of course, now I'm wondering if I could have talked her down to $25. :D

Here ya go. The spot of rust can be seen on the scissors, as well as a spot on the plain edge blade. The slight imperfections on the plain edge don't show up in this pic. This is before cleaning/oiling.

I got one at a pawn shop for $25 or $30 a while back- but my Wal-Mart has had their waves on sale for $45.

Nice score.  The main blade is in much better shape than I expected from the description.

Haha this is multitool.org, I don't think the answer to "do I need an extra ____" is ever "no".   :gimme:

Nice find!
Love to adopt and restore multitools that have been a little neglected. They tend to become my favorites especially when the price is right.
That one looks new.
