Best, cheapest knife
on: October 04, 2015, 07:25:24 AM
Dumb thread for everyone to toss ideas into. Want to get my cousin a knife as a gift just for the hell of it. Does a lot of box breaking and not a lot of sharpening or knife care. He has a Leek, so was thinking another Kershaw, the CRKT Edgie 2 seemed interesting if nothing else.

So let's hear your take!

Another Kershaw would be your best bet, but a Ontario RAT (I or II) would be a good option as well.

The best budget knives in my opinion.
1. Byrd Meadowlark 2 or Cara Cara 2
2. CRKT Squid
3. Kershaw Shuffle 1 or 2
4. Ontario RAT 1 or 2

Really hard to beat a good box cutter for those that break them down.  I know it's not exciting nor popular but it's true.

#2 would be knock off of popular models made by enlan, sanrenmu, bee, or something along those lines.

+1 on the suggestions of a Box cutter - tough, cheap and when the blade gets blunt (which it will, and quite quickly cutting cardboard) no skill required to swap in a new blade.  Get one that is safe, good ergonomics, easy to deploy, and quick to switch blades.  That will be something he will appreciate and use, a lot.

Box breaking, not sharpening, cheap ...

Only one option like dks said, Stanley knife.

Or if you want it more compact, Gerber EAB, has a pocketclip is small, and you exchange blades when dull, no sharpening involved. Perfect for breaking own boxes as cardboard will dull a blade in no time.

If a friend gave me a Stanley knife as a gift I would not be so happy. Best tool for the job but a crappy gift if you ask me. No soul or class.

But this gift isn't for you, is it ?  Unless the following accurately describes your usage:
Quote
Does a lot of box breaking and not a lot of sharpening or knife care.

So many people make the same error - selecting a gift THEY would like to receive, rather than something the recipient will really like &  appreciate (and the latter is often much more difficult to choose, unless you know the recipient well).

It's like giving someone a 10mm spanner. It might be the best tool for the job but it's got no soul. A gift of a knife is much deeper that cutting.

If the anyone is breaking down a lot of boxes smart money is on the box cutter IMO.  Not only is no sharpening needed but a choice like a EAB is discreet for non knife people.  I'd get the guy a EAB plus a bunch of spare blades.

What I dislike is giving gifts that never get used so while it may not be as cool as a knife ( EAB is pretty cool IMO ) the recipient would definitely get loads of use.
