This is kinda left field but if someone could make a utility knife with screwdriver blades so basically a Crater C33T with a utility blade, phillips, flathead screwdrivers and a bottle opener. If someone made this, i'm sure it would sell like hotcakes.
I knew my wife was a keeper when she transitioned from calling it a knife thingy to a multi-tool.

I've just found this multi tool by 'Quirky' called the 'Switch', with a similar concept. Has anyone seen or had experience with this tool?

http://the-gadgeteer.com/2012/01/22/switch-modular-pocket-knife-review/

If so, or even if not, what do you think of it?

I remembered seeing one from Chako's collection.  I like the concept, but the size is too large for my taste.  I would much rather see it made in similar size to SAK 91mm, and would consider getting one if the tool quality is decent.

Concept is nice however when members have talked about a tool being "fiddly" this is what I think of.  Keep in mind a MT user is someone who finds a solution.  I don't need a "dedicated" tool as I can manage with my MT.  I hope this makes sense.  There are those that carry a MT for "fun" but for those that use theirs as part of their equipment and not just as a "backup" we don't need elaborate arrays of tool sets.  I believe this is why the LM Wave is such a beast in terms of sales.

The Wave solves so many problems within a relatively small package.  Many have discussed a Juice sized Spirit  :pok:.

A one and done tool is just not going to happen.  I like what Comis posted, in particular #2.

Jasondp, welcome to MT.O!

There are already many good ideas, and if I may, please allow me to share ideas deviate from the format:

1) Fine folks here are the multi-tool elite users and owners, but because of their vast different background, you will hear different opinions pointing to million directions.  These ideas are all legit in their own rights, and you may have to decide this tool is a general-purpose tool(which may look like every other tool that is popular and existing), or a speSmurfpillst tool(something like Crunch in LM camp), so you could pick ideas or centralize to one direction.

2) To make this process more efficient, I will suggest to look into the 'best' MT and best selling MT of the size(keychain/pocket/mid/large), and either improve and add elements, or pick out the must haves, and decide groundup.

3)For me, my dream MT will be a shinny grippy Victorinox Spirit, with compound leverage needlenose pliers, OHO blade, and mod-able tools.

Good luck!  And please keep us posted!

I have seen the Quirky, and it should be considered lego or meccano on a multitool theme rather than an actual tool. It's marketted as a tool, but quite frankly it's appalling. It's a while since I saw one in the flesh, but I can't remember a single redeeming feature on it. Good luck trying to find anyone who actually carries and uses one.

The key attributes that someone would probably look for in a multitool are:

Function: Does it do what I want it to do

Ergonomics: Can I use it safely and comfortably without getting blisters or hand fatigue.

Size/Weight/Carry: Can I carry it how I want without it being too bulky or heavy

Price: Is it worth the money (to me) at the price it's on sale for

All four of these criteria will vary greatly from person to person. Unfortunately, the Quirky set itself at a massive disadvantage on all fronts by being crap, cumbersome, bulky and expensive.

If you take away anything from looking at the Quirky, consider it an excellent example of what NOT to do  :tu:

1.) Plier based I've got Vic Spirit X, LM Rebar (modded) and SOG SwitchPlier 2, SAKs are Farmer, Pioneer, Classic, Alox Bantam, Weekender and Hunter and PocketWrench 2

2.) Almost daily, mostly for small repairs around the office. At home they are simply more convenient, i.e. closer, than dedicated tools

3.) Pliers, Phillips, blades and awl would be the most used ones

4.) Wire strippers and file

5.) all are pretty pleasant although they did take some getting used to

  • Any tool is better than nothing. Some not by much

The Switch multitool allowed the user to completely take it apart and select which tools they wanted.

I did mention that in my first post in this thread.

As for what I think of it... not impressed, but it is a radically different approach to the problem.

I have a Switch, but I don't think I would ever carry it to actually use it as a tool.  It's a nice theory, but not very practical - too bulky, and the tools themselves feel like there wasn't a great deal of refinement/development put into actually using them.  The SOG execution of the customisable tool load concept is way better (but not perfect either - the large tools could be much longer in the bigger tool handles).

There have been several component based tools where you could customize the tool load out, including the Quirky Switch, the Coleman ProLock and the CRKT Flux.

None have been successful.

Yes I have one, come to think of it, I have every one of the models Def mentioned above.

The Quirky Switch is a neat collector piece. I would never dream of EDC'ing one out in the field.

The Coleman Pro Lock is a design concept with some good thought into it. It is unfortunate that they didn't sell enough to make additional tool pods. One thing with mine, the tool pods are a bear to unlock.

How could I forget about the CKRT Flux. I think everyone just knew that was going to bomb at the sale levels.

Here is a photo of my copy.

There are also a few of these do anything kits made for the vehicle that include an ungodly assortment of driver bits and sockets.

Pocket Tool Box:

And the Great Escape Kit.

The issue with the above...both have belt loops which is amazing as they would be too large and heavy to wear comfortably on your hip.

As I said, there is an art to doing this properly.

As many have discovered the hard way.
